Obituary of: Professor Carl M. Harris
I was greatly saddened by the news of the death of Carl Harris. A valued friend and a gifted researcher, I knew Carl all the way back to his World War II days with the Operations Research Office at Johns Hopkins University. His report on the implementation of President Truman’s Executive Order committing the Army to end racial discrimination is a gem. Published with A. Loerch and E. Rattner in Socio-Economic Planning Sciences (34) (2000) 73–84, it is ‘‘must
reading’’ for all OR workers under the title ‘‘Racial equity, the United States Army, operations research, and social science.’’ He will be sorely missed in a society still struggling with this problem.
