ABSTRAK
Penelitian ini mencoba menggambarkan pengaruh interaksi peradaban Islam dengan peradaban Barat terhadap ide demokrasi. Peradaban Barat merupakan masyarakat baru dari suku-suku barbar belahan utara Eropa yang berhasil menaklukkan bagian barat Kekaisaran Romawi. Suku-suku tersebut kemudian menjadi identitas baru bersatu di bawah nama Kekaisaran Romawi Suci. Beratus-ratus tahun masyarakat tersebut berada di bawah kekuasaan Paus hingga akhirnya mengalami perubahan secara perlahan setelah peradaban Islam berkembang pesat di bagian barat benua Eropa, Spanyol. Perubahan dalam masyarakat Barat dipengaruhi dari adanya interaksi antar kedua peradaban dalam bentuk kerja sama dan konflik.
Ide demokrasi merupakan warisan dari peradaban Yunani Klasik. Berabad-abad setelah peradaban tersebut runtuh, tulisan-tulisan lama dari Yunani Klasik dikenalkan oleh sraja-sarjana Muslin kepada masyarakat Barat. Pemikiran-pemikan para filsuf Yunani Klasik telah memberikan pandangan baru bagi masyarakat Barat tentang negara dan kebebasan yang berkontribusi terhadap perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan dan perubahan politik. Perubahan tersebut diawali dengan suatu gerakan yang mereka sebut sebagai kelahiran kembali filsafat Yunani, Renaissance. Konflik-konflik yang terjadi, khususnya Perang Salib, telah mempercepat proses perubahan tersebut.

ABSTRACT
This research tries to describe Islamic civilization interaction with Western civilization and its effect on idea of democracy. Western civilization is a new community of barbarian tribes from northern Europe who managed to conquer the western part of the Roman Empire. These tribes later became a new identity that united under the name of the Holy Roman Empire. Hundred years, that society run under the reign of the Pope which finally change slowly after the Islamic civilization thrived in the western part of Europe, Spain. The transformation in Western society was influenced by this interaction in the form of cooperation and conflict.
The idea of democracy is a legacy of Ancient Greek civilization. After many centuries as from the fall of Ancient Greek, the old literature from that civilization introduced by Muslim scholars to Western society. Ideas fromAncient Greek philosophersgave them a new perspectiveabout political system and freedom that contribute in the evolution of science and political change. The change begun with a movement that they named with the rebirth of Greek philosophy, Renaissance. With all those conflicts in their society, especially the Crusades, has accelerated the revolution.
