blessings that the writer finally completed this thesis. Then, the writer doesn’t

forget to say thanks to Prophet Muhammad SAW, and especially for my parents

This thesis is aimed at fulfilling one of the requirements for the degree of

Sarjana Pendidikan at English Department, Faculty Languages and Arts, State

University of Medan.

In completing this thesis, the writer encountered some difficulties but

this school, English teacher and the students of class ninth in the first

semester of MTs Lab IKIP Medan.

Her beloved friends of English education (Nurhayati Ayanda, S.Pd. Purnama Sari, Maya Puspita, Umami Handayani) and all students of

Ext C 09, and also for class B, A for their support, information,

encouragement, and assistance.

It is realized that this thesis is far from perfect. Therefore, comments,

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Language as means of communication that make people can express their

purpose, feeling, and their opinion. It can say that language is an aid that makes

people can interact and communicate well with one other.

English is an International language that very important to learn. In

Indonesia, English is taught as foreign language (EFL), it has been included in the

Curriculum of School in Indonesia.

Based on the Curriculum of Educational Unit Level (KTSP) which was

legitimated in 2006, learning English in high school is emphasized on the four

basic skills of language, namely; listening, speaking, writing, and reading. By

these four skill students’ are expected to be competent and able to have the good

prestige in their school, college, or in their work place.

Based on my observation in writing the students were difficulty to write

English and when the writer interview the students, they said that they needed

good method in learning process like method. So, the observer choose Factual

and Historical Method as the Method in learning writing narrative text.

Writing is needed in school environment not only as tool for transferring

the knowledge from teacher to the students and student with students but also as

one of English skills that should be learned by students, besides others skill like

As one skill of English, writing can help students to learn and develop

their English by expressingtheir knowledge, experience and so on. It can be

expressed in form of essay a paragraph, a letter, a short story and etc.

Writing is a process of thinking. Brown (2001:335)states written products

are often the result of thinking, drafting, and revising procedures that require

specialized skills, skill that not every speaker develops naturally. The master of

vocabulary, spelling, grammar, punctuation, appropriate content, words selection

appropriate to the audience, topic and occasion are required in writing. However,

the ability of thinking and the ability to organize are crucial in order to make you

express you idea in well-organized sentence, which have a good coherence and

cohesion.

Since English in Indonesia is taught as foreign language, the students still

found it as a difficult one to study, especially in teaching writing. There are many

reasons that cause this phenomenon. on of them is the real English teaching and

learning process. Most of the teacher still use the conventional method or classical

system, teacher still apply the “teacher centered learning” system, it means the

process of teaching focused on the teacher. This way makes students passive in

class. Therefore, the students never come to the aim or to the objective of teaching

writing as a foreign language.

In order to achieve the goal of teaching writing, the research attempt to

apply the most important teaching method, that is, factual and historical method.

Factual and Historical method is one of the great methods that can be applied to

with student’s real word situation, that is, with the context of their personal,

social, and cultural circumstance.

The writer limits is only to improve student’s achievement on writing

narrative text because narrative text deals problem events. It is a story that has

character, setting, and action. So, the student teach to write a story that relates

with their real world situation in which in their story detail clarify the characters,

setting and action. It expects that students become easy to get ideas, motivated,

more confidence in writing, especially on narrative text, so that the goals of

teaching writing can achieve by using Factual and Historical method.

In this research, the writer will confuse on student’s success achieving in

writing narrative text by using factual and historical method. Narrative is one of

the genres of writing which tell readers a story or event. This research will

conduct to investigate how factual andhistorical method improves the student’s

achievement in writing narrative text. By using Factual and Historical method, it

assumes that the student’s teaching and learning process will improve better.

B. The Problem of the Study

Related to the background, the problem in this research is formulated as

the following:

“Is there any significant improvement on student’s achievement in writing

C. The Scope of the Study

The scope of this research is limited on the use narrative writing by

applying Factual and Historical method.

D. The Objective of the Study

The objective of this research is to find out the effectiveness of using

Factual and Historical method and Learning method on students’ achievement on

writing text.

E. The Significant of the Study

The findings of this research are expected to be useful for :

1) English teachers to apply Factual and Historical method in their writing

class to improve the students’ writing achievement.

2) English learners to enlarge their knowledge to write in English and to

improve their writing achievement by using Factual and Historical method.

3) The readers who wan to improve their knowledge about teaching and

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

A. Conclusion

After analyzing the data, the writer found that the qualitative data showed

that the students’ writing score increase during cycles. Moreover, the qualitative

data showed that the students are interested and more comfortable in learning

narrative writing by using Factual and Historical. It can be concluded that Factual

and Historical can improve students’ achievement in narrative text.

B. Suggestion

Some suggestion are pointed out as follows:

1. It is that English Teacher used Factual and Historical, so that they can

improve their students’ achievement in narrative text.

2. To the students, it is suggested to use relevant topic to conduct the farther

research by using Factual and Historical.

3. For all reader, may this research will bring ability through Factual and
