The European Cloud and Radiation Experiment EUCREX is a major program that has been conducted from 1991 to 1995, with the support of the European Union, for the experimental study of cloud radiative properties. During the 1994 field campaign in

Brest France , the core of the project, co-ordinated by Prof. E. Raschke, was mainly dedicated to the study of cirrus clouds with the Falcon-20 of DLR, equipped with

radiometers POLDER and OVID , and the Avion de Recherche Atmospherique et

Teledetection ARAT , equipped with a second POLDER radiometer and the lidar

LEANDRE.

ŽFrance provided additional funding for a joint study of the radiative properties of. marine boundary layer clouds, with the Meteo-France Merlin-IV instrumented aircraft,

Ž equipped for in situ measurements. The Max Planck Institut f ur Meteorologie Ham-

burg, Germany contributed also with additional funding and instrumentation spec-. trometer OVID on the Falcon-20 and additional microphysics probes on the Merlin-IV .

A total of 10 scientific flights have been performed with the Merlin-IV between the 8th and 26th of April 1994. Three flights only were co-ordinated with the ARAT and the

F-20, for simultaneous in situ M-IV and remote sensing F-20 and ARAT measure-ments of the stratocumulus layer. On April 12 and 15, alto-stratus or cirrus clouds were also present in the area. After the pre-analysis phase, the 18 April mission 206 was selected for the horizontal homogeneity of the layer and the absence of high level clouds. Most of the partners thus concentrated their analysis on this situation. This series of papers illustrates the complementarities of the measurements, from in situ sampling of cloud microphysical properties to their remotely sensed radiative properties at the small scale with airborne instruments to the scale of the satellite with the AVHRR radiometer.
