TEACHERS’ TARGET LANGUAGE USE IN EFL CLASSROOMS: STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS

ABSTRACT

The frequency of target language (TL) in classroom has been debatable. There are some researchers argue that TL should be taught in that language. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to gain insight students’ perspective and perceptions toward teachers’ TL use in classroom. In this paper, the importance of teachers’ TL use in classroom, the benefit of teachers’ TL use in classroom, students perceiving understanding toward the teachers’ use of TL in classroom, and students’ perception towards teachers’ proficiency will be discussed. This study was conducted in Faculty of Language and Literature Satya Wacana Christian University among first year students 2015/2016. Open-ended questionnaire was used in order to collect the data and followed by interview to clarify or gain more data. The findings suggest that students thought teachers’ TL use is important, teachers’ TL use benefits the students such as skills and language aspects improvement, but there were some difficulties that the students faced such as vocabulary and teachers’ performance. This study may impact the application of TL in University especially for first year students in Indonesia.
