THE CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHER AS PERCEIVED BY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

The background of this paper is what makes a good English language teacher as perceived by Senior High School students. The purpose of the present study is to explore what Senior High School students’ view and expectation regarding an effective English language teacher (EELT). A quantitative method was used in this study. The questionnaire was administered 120 research participants from the Senior High Schools Students in SMA LAB, Salatiga, especially grade X. In the questionnaire, in part one there are 30 statements about the four competencies (socio-affective skills, pedagogical knowledge, subject-matter knowledge and personal qualities) of EELT and in part two is an open-ended question as additional statement of EELT which has not been mentioned in the characteristics. The findings have revealed that four competencies of EELT are really important and also found Senior High School (SHS) students’ needs the most is an EELT who should be able to create an entertaining atmosphere to carry out the class activities and patient in working with students of lesser ability, explain lessons clearly, understand the linguistic systems of English grammar well, have a high level of proficiency with English vocabulary and helpful and respects students’ needs and be open to criticism.
