Adolescent Girl’s
Fauziah Nami Nasution dan Ade Rahmawati ABSTRACT
The research aims to find out the differences self-images on adolescent
boy’s Acne Vulgaris patient and on adolescent girl’s. Self-image is the mental picture of an individual about his physical appearance Jersild (1963). Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammation of the follicle polisebasea characterized by comedones, papules, pustules, and cysts in predilection areas, such as the face, shoulders, chest, and back. The population of the research is senior students in Medan who have Acne Vulgaris. There are 200 students as sample in this research, by comparison 100 adolescent boys and 100 adolescent girls. For measuring instrument the researcher uses self-image scale which is structured, based on the 3 aspects of self-image, that is perceptual component, conceptual component and attitudional component.
The researcher uses Independent Sample T-test method to analyze the data, (2-tailed) acquired value t hitung is bigger than t tabel is 4.515 > 1.960 (df =
198 , α =.05), then hypothesis nol ( ) is denied while, the alternative hypothesis ) is accepted. Average score of the self-image of adolescent boys higher than
girls (Mrml = 123.08; Mrmp = 112.71). This suggests that adolescent boys with acne vulgaris has a self-image that is more positive than adolescent girls with acne vulgaris. This result is consistent with the opinion of Papalia & Olds (2008) which states that the girls will have a great attention to physical appearance than adolescent boys. Adolescent boys with acne vulgaris is not too concerned with other people's assessment of the appearance and the presence of acne does not reduce the desire to interact with others.
