It is natural that national pork production has a very small share(0.2%) compared to world production since Islam is the major religion in Indonesia. One thing to note is that pork production increased until 2004. In 2001 pork production was only 160 thousand ton and then rose to 185.6 thousand ton. This means, average growth during 2001-2004 was 13.73%. In 2005 pork production decreased to 174.9 thousand ton with minus 6.2% growth compared to the previous year.
Opportunity for Investment
Production Centers are in Bali, North Sumatra, NTT, South Sulawesi and Jakarta. Bali is the most contributing province with 80.51 thousand ton or 47.93% of national production, with average population of 848 thousand heads. North Sumatra and NTT rank 2nd and 3rd respectively with 18.64 thousand ton (10.83%) and 15.83 thousand ton (8.81%).
While export volume stays in low level compared to production, it is a pity that domestic consumption data is not available that it is hard to analyze pork business in Indonesia during 2001-2005. During these period, export volume dropped from 27.9 thousand ton in 2001 to 2.8 thousand ton in 2004. This means that the average growth rate declined to minus 112.0% in 2003.
