# # # # # ######################################################################### Building and Maintaining an Audience for Classical Music
Like any business, a performing arts organization must continue to attract and keep new customers or it will die. Over the past generation, there has been a steady decrease in the number of young people attending concerts of classical music and supporting the organizations that perform classical music. The average age of those who regularly attend concerts has been rising. This has led to a crisis situation in many areas of the country, with orchestras folding, sometimes in mid-season, due to lack of support from the public, as well as private and government funding sources.
What must the average small city or community orchestra do in these difficult times? How can it face the challenge of keeping the support of its older audience and also attract new and younger listeners? Why are people no longer as loyal to traditional concerts of the music we call classical?
No one denies that the vast generation currently between the ages of 30 and 50 regards music differently from previous generations. This was the first generation brought up with rock music, the first generation to claim its own music as part of the rebellion and independence seeking of adolescence. As the years passed, many discovered the joys of serious music and became supporters of classical arts
organizations, but millions did not. The groundwork had not been laid during those early years.
Many younger listeners feel uncomfortable in the formal setting of a classical concert, with orchestra members in formal dress and audiences attired
conservatively just to sit and listen to music. They are used to attending rock concerts in jeans and T-shirts. They sense an agenda that excludes them. Perhaps they may applaud at the wrong time. Perhaps every knows more about the music than they do, and they are missing the kind of knowledge that would help them understand and appreciate the music.
Orchestras are responding in a number of ways. They are addressing the issue of lack of knowledge with short lectures before, during and after concerts. The lectures prepare the listener for the works and composers being performed.
Sometimes the conductor will chat informally with the audience during the concert, trying consciously to impart information and provide a sense of informality and spontaneity. Concerts are being performed at non-traditional hours, a cocktail concert scheduled directly after work hours, or even a Sunday morning brunch
concert. All of this is designed to break the mold of stuffiness and rigidity that many listeners associate with classical concerts.
Traditional concepts of appropriate programming are being revised. The walls between classical music, ethnic music, jazz, etc. are being broken down.
Programs may include both classical and jazz works, contemporary music from Africa and Asia as well as Europe and the Americas. Local and national arts organizations often provide grants to groups that reach out to new listeners with their
