bands,andtheywere alwaysreadytoserve.Business

conventiondelegatesactedas leaderswitha visionduringtheweek,representingtheirfellowmembers
astheymade
recommendationstotheNationalFFA and
votedonkeyissues that willguidetheorganizationinto the future.For
many,
sittingclose tothestageand
servingas anationalFFA conven-
tiondelegateisonlyadream.
Four-hundred and
sixty-threeFFA members
filledthisespecially
important
roleat thenational convention.By
actingas delegates, they servedon one
ofnine nationalcommittees and made
recommendations
fortheNationalFFA Board
ofDirectorstoconsider.After
two days
ofworking
in their committees, thedelegates'firstbusiness session
began Wednesday morning with
therollcall. Next, the delegatesapproved
the68thNationalFFA Convention minutes and
the treasurer's report.The
businessmoved
intocommittee
reportsbeginning with
the Agricul- turalEducation Trends Committee.
One
ofthecommittee's main recom- mendations was
toestablish a profi- ciencyaward
areainagricultural education.The Chapter
ActivitiesCommittee
reportcaused some
discussion.The
committee recommended adding
a sectiontotheAmerican FFA Degree
applicationformembers
tolisttheircommunity
serviceinvolvement.They
also
recommended developing new Made
For Excellence conferencecurriculum
focusingon more hands-on
activities.After
an amendment
tostrikethissectionfailed,the
Chapter
ActivitiesCommittee
reportpassed.Making
publications,videosand FFA homepage
materialavailable inSpanish and
otherlanguages
if requestedwas
aconsistenttheme mentioned by
severalcommittees.During
thebusiness session, adelegatefrom Puerto
Ricothanked
theother delegatesforconsideringmembers who speak languages
otherthan
English.Recommendations
involvingthe Internet alsoappeared
inseveralcommittee
reports.The Communica-
tions
and
Public RelationsCommittee suggested encouraging members
to interactwith
othermembers on
theInternet
and
e-mailby
establishinga"live" chatline.
The Marketing and Merchandising Committee recom- mended
thatFFA members be
ableto placeFFA Ventures
ordersdirectlyby
e-mail.One
ofthemost
controversialtopicswas
thepossible relocationoftheState Presidents'Conference
toan
areanear thefutureNationalFFA Center
in Indianapolis,recommended by
theLeadership and
PersonalDevelopment Committee. During
thebusiness sessionan amendment was made
to strikethisrecommendation from
thecommittee's
report. Afterdiscussionabout
the traditionand
historyinWashington,
D.C.,and
theimportance
ofhaving
nationalstaffmembers
atthe conference, theamendment passed and
