Rini’s information shows that despite the government’s attempt to stop academic competence-based admission tests to primary schools, favorite schools are still prac- ticing selection tests due to high demand but minimal seats. The government policy of age-based admission to primary school will only be fair if school favoritism does not exist. And school favoritism could only be prevented if the government guaran- teed equal quality of education in every school, not by pathologizing early academic learning.

Hani Yulindrasari is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Early Childhood Teacher Education, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. She received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology (2002) from Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia, a Master’s degree in Gender and Development (2006), and a Ph.D. in Gender Studies (2017) from the University of Melbourne, Australia. Her research interest is gender research in education and family settings.
Vina Adriany is the Director of SEAMEO CECCEP (South East Asian Ministers of Education Organization—Centre for Early Childhood Education and Parenting), as well as Professor of Early Childhood Education and Gender at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Her research focuses on the issues of gender and social justice in early childhood education (ECE) as well as the impact of neoliberalism in ECE. She has published numbers of peer reviewed articles and book chap- ters on the topic. She has also been invited as visiting lecturer at Sutan Qaboos University, Oman;
Gothenburg University; and University West, Sweden. She was a guest editor for Policy Future in Education (PFIE) Special Edition on Neoliberalism and Practices of ECE in Asia and Journal of Pedagogy’s special issue on “Negotiating the local and global discourses in shaping Early Childhood Education Practices in the Global South: An act of Decolonialisation”. Currently, she serves as an editorial board for Policy Futures in Education (SAGE); International Journal of Early Years Education (Routledge); Global Studies of Childhood (SAGE); and Children and Society (Wiley-Blackwell).
Euis Kurniati is Associate Professor of early childhood education at the Department of Early Childhood Education, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. She obtained her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in Guidance and Counseling from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Her research interest is play and creativity studies in ECE.
