CHAPTER IV FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIOM
B. Discussion
other hand, there were 38.10% of students who agreed, while there were only 9.52% of students who responded it with undecided. In short, group work gives benefit to the students.
Based on the result analysis above, most of the students agreed with the statement „‟group work activities help me to find new ideas‟‟. It can be concluded that mostly students agreed with the statement. Nevertheless, there were some students disagreed with the statement „‟group work activities can improve my speaking skills‟‟.
As a consequence of the result analysis on the five elements of group work, it showed that most of the students agreed with the statements. If sorted from high to low that is started from simultaneous interaction, positive interdependence, equal participation, group processing, and the last is individual accountability. In short, group work technique facilitated students in English learning and gives benefit to the students.
group work because it helps me and my friend to exchange ideas or opinion‟‟,
„‟group work make me close with my friends‟‟ and „‟I like to help troubled of friends in group work‟‟. As well as that students are interdependent with each other to provide benefits to all group members. Similarly with Johnson
&Johnson (1999) „‟positive interdependence is the perception that you are linked with others in a way, so that you cannot succeed unless they do (and vice versa); that is, their works benefits you and your works benefits them‟‟.
2. Individual Accountability
Elements of group work in individual accountability, there were some students undecided with the statements, „‟I always participate in group work‟‟, „‟group work trains me to be responsible, and group work trains my leadership spirit‟‟. Similarly with Daba et al (2017) in the result of their research which is the result indicated that students had misconception on objectives of group work and they perceived group work as a means of getting pass mark then seeing it as a means of learning cooperatively through activity. According to Johnson & Roger Johnson (1999) „‟individual accountability exist when the performance of each individual student is assessed and the results are given back to the group and the individual.
3. Equal Participation
Elements of group work in equal participation students agreed with the every statements because it seems from the statements that has chosen by students, which is „‟group work make me active in learning‟‟. So, it can be concluded that group work technique make students active in learning. In the same way, Chiriac (2014) in the result of her research indicate that most
students‟ experiences involved group work that facilitated learning, especially in the area of academic knowledge. Same as with the theory of Kagan (1992) „‟equal participation means that all group members should actively participate in the group work‟‟.
4. Simultaneous Interaction
Elementsof group work in simultaneous interaction mostly students agreed with two items which are„‟group work activities taught me how to respect the opinions of others‟‟ and„‟group work taught me not to prioritize personal interest but to prioritize common interest‟‟. It means that in the group work not only help students to understand the English material but also train students not to think about themselves. Equally, According to Kagan (1992) that simultaneous interaction is face to face interaction and the promotion of each member‟s successful learning to encourage for sharing resources and helping and praising each other efforts to learn.
5. Group Processing
Elements of group work in group processing, most of the students agreed with the statement „‟group work help me to find new ideas‟‟.
Likewise, Yanse (2016) in her research, she found that the students tended to have positive perception towards the use of group discussion and have positive perception on their engagement during the implementation of group discussion in the speaking session of CLS 1. According to Kagan (1992) Group processing suggests that students should be taught communication skills, effective leadership, decision-making skills, trust building, and conflict management skills so that can discuss and monitor each members‟
performance and behaviors. Whereas, Johnson & Johnson (1999) groups processing such as enables learning groups to focus on group maintenance;
facilitate the learning of social skills; ensure that members receive feedback on their participation; and reminds students to practice collaborative skills consistently.
Based on the explanation about five elements of group work above, it can be concluded that, for the first element of group work is positive interdependence, students agreed on the statements in positive interdependence, it could be seen from the students‟ choices on the statement „‟group work teach me to help each other‟‟. The second element of group work is individual accountability, there were some students undecided with the statements, „‟I always participate in group work‟‟, „‟group work trains me to be responsible, and group work trains my leadership spirit‟‟. The third element of group work is equal participation students agreed with the statements „‟ group work activities make me active in learning‟‟
and the other statement that have chosen by the students. The fourth elements of group work is simultaneous interaction mostly students agreed with the two statements, they are: „‟group work taught students how to respect the opinion of others‟‟ and „‟group work taught students not to prioritize personal interest but to prioritize common interest‟‟. The last elements of group work is group processing, students agreed with the statement „‟group work help me to find new ideas‟‟.
CHAPTER V
CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
In this chapter contains two parts. They are conclusion and suggestion.
In the conclusion, the researcher answered the question from the problem statement. After that, the researcher gave suggestion.
A. Conclusion
Based on the discussion previously, the researcher can concluded that the students‟ perception on group work in English learning at the Eighth Grade of SMP Negeri 7 Duampanua is good. Most of the students agreed with the statements on elements of group work, which were positive interdependence, individual accountability, equal participation, simultaneous interaction and group processing. Students agreed on every statement such as, group work made students to help each other, exchange their opinion, made them close with their friends and soon. Conversely, some students prefer individual work compared with group work, not all of the students participate when doing group work, and some students are not responsible and still uncertain to be a leader. In short, Students experienced that group work technique facilitated students in learning and give benefit to the students so that group work technique is good to use in English learning.
B. Suggestion
43
Based on the conclusion described above, the researcher gave some suggestion as the following:
1. For the English teachers especially the English teacher in SMP Negeri 7 Duampanua at the eighth grade, English teacher should give students motivation to make them active in group work and give question to the students who are not active in group work by saying the name of the students along with creating a friendly learning atmosphere. In addition group work technique is good to use.
2. For the students at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 7 Duampanua, students must foster self-awareness to participate in group work and pay attention to what is conveyed by the English teacher.
3. For further researcher, it is be better not only search the students perception on group work, but also know about teacher perception on the use of group work, which means what are the constraints that the teachers feel in guiding students on group work.
