3. Hypothesis testing

The significant level (α) = 5% and df = 24, and the t-table value is 1.710 because the t-test has a value 10.604, it can be concluded that t-test is higher than t-table (10,604 > 1,710) it means that after receiving treatment, the students’

listening skills improved. As a result, the null hypothesis (H0) is denied while the alternative hypothesis (Hi) is accepted. It was discovered that students’ listening skills improved when they used Memrise Application.

The second meeting was conducted on 4th March 2021.The research started the class with checking attendance and motivated students before teaching material. The research asked students to download and log in Memrise Application. Then the researcher guided the students’ how to use the application.

The instrument was used worksheet with the topic “Talking about daily routine”.

While listening, the students’ were asked to filling the empty space with provided words. After finished, the researcher and students discussed to answer the test together.

The third meeting was conducted on 10th March 2021. On this meeting, the students continued to learn using Memrise Application. The activities in this meeting were still the same as the first meeting, but improve the level of vocabulary. The topic of this treatment was the dialogue “Describing people, place, and things”.

The fourth meeting was conducted on 17th March 2021. The topic on this meeting was listening to the song “That’s The Way It Is” by Celine Dion. The meeting activities were same as the previous meeting but used different listening topic. Before starting the lesson, the researcher review previous vocabulary, then the students continued learning by using Memrise Application. The ending of the lesson, the researcher give a worksheet and closes the class.

The fifth meeting was conducted on 24th March 2021. The topic on this meeting was listening to the fairy tale story “The Fisherman and His Wife”. The meeting started by checking the attendances and motivated the students. The

researcher evaluated students’ by reviewing previous vocabulary that was learned.

After that, the students’ continued the level of Memrise Application. The ending of the lesson, the researcher give a worksheet and closes the class.

The sixth meeting was conducted on 31st March 2021. The topic on this meeting was listening to the song “Before You Go” by Lewis Capaldi. The meeting started by checking the attendances and motivated the students. The researcher evaluated the students’ by reviewing previous vocabulary that was learned. After that, the students’ continued the level of Memrise Application. The ending of the lesson, the researcher give a worksheet and closes the class.

The seventh meeting was conducted on 7th April 2021. On this meeting took a topic listening to fairy tale story “The Lion and The Mouse”. The meeting started by checking the attendances and motivated the students. The researcher evaluated the students’ by reviewing previous vocabulary that was learned. After that, the students’ continued the level of Memrise Application. The ending of the lesson, the researcher was gave a worksheet and closes the class.

The eight meeting took a topic listening to a dialogue “My Ideal Home”. In this meeting the researcher conducted Post Test meeting. The researcher just gives a test after opened the class. After 8 meetings, the researcher proved that learning by using Memrise Application can improve students’ listening skill. It can be proven through the result of Pre-Test and Post-Test.

The observation that researcher did in SMPN 3 Bungoro it was found that the teachers’ method in teaching listening skill was limited by the media. The

teacher’s just gave listening test by the audio without listening exercise. And the students’ were rarely listening to native speaker. So, the students’ interests in listening skill were low because they were assuming that English is difficult lesson. Students’ with low listening skill sometimes cannot understand the meaning of the word. As the consequences the students’ were lack in vocabulary mastery. The researcher concluded that one of the factors that made students low in listening skill caused by the media used in teaching process. After the researcher taught listening skill through Memrise Application, the researcher found that some students seem to be motivated to learn English. It cause, Memrise Application is easy to use and easy to understand. The students were attractive in doing the test. It can be proved by the enhanced of students’ score between Pre- Test and Post-Test.

Aminatun & Oktaviani (2019) assert that Memrise Application has given positive put for students’ English vocabulary mastery, especially English for business. By knowing and understanding English vocabulary, it will be easier for them to understand the materials. Besides, Memrise is easy to use since students only need to open their smartphone to access Memrise and it can be done anywhere and anytime as long as students have their internet connection.

Nuralisah & Karevati (2020) stated that using Memrise is effective for increasing students’ vocabulary mastery. Students memorize vocabulary more easily and are happy in the learning process. This application is also one of reference learning strategies that research can do to teach in class. For readers of this research can do to teach in class.

According to the classification table at findings, the result of Pre-Test finding shows that no one students got very good score (0%), two (8%) students got good score, 13 (52%) students got fair score, 5 (20%) students got poor score, and 5 (20%) students got very poor score. While in Post Test, one (4%) students got very good score, 12 (48%) students got good score, 12 (48%) students got fair score, and no one student got poor and very poor score.

The mean score of Post-Test (74.22) was greater than Post-Test (55.40). The level of significant (p) 5% and df = 24, and the value of the table is 1.710 while the value of t-test is 10.604. It shows that the t-test value is greater than t-table.

So, it can be concluded that the students’ listening skill is improved after getting six treatments. The alternative hypothesis (Hi) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is refused. So it can be concluded that learning through Memrise Application was effective to improve students listening skill.
