FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

A. Findings

The purpose of this research was to find out the use of English Podcast Application improve students’ listening skills. This research was conducted at the eleventh grade students of UPT SMA Negeri 11 Pangkep in the academic year of 2020/2021 which consists of 20 students. The result data finding found The use of English Podcast Application can improve the students’

listening skills. The result of data analysis could be seen as follow:

1. The improvement of Students’ Listening Comprehension

In order to answer the research question in the previous chapter, the researcher administrated two kinds of test such us pre-test that given before the treatment and post-test that given after the students got the treatment. The result of the students’ listening comprehension by using True False text was presented in the table below:

The table shows the students’ improvement in finding listening comprehension by using English Podcast Application. The number sees it of the mean score of the pre-test, which is 58.00, and the number of post- test is 81.50.

a. Pre-Test

The pre-test obtained students’ listening rate score percentage before the researcher gave the students treatment. The process involved 20 students in the eleventh grade of UPT SMA Negeri 11 Pangkep.

It shows during this research, students do the test by listening the podcast that the researcher gave, and answered the question on google forms. It can be seen below the result of students pre-test mean score.

Table shows the results of students’ listening score. Based on the data which the researcher obtained from the pre-test. There were eight students in Low category (40%), seven students in the Fair category (35%), two students in Good Category (10%), and three students in Very Good category (15%). The researcher assumed that the students’

listening comprehension was needed to be improved from the score percentage of students’ listening comprehension.

Based on the data of Pre-Test, as clearly presented the mean of the total pre-test score in eleventh grade of UPT SMA Negeri 11 Pangkep was 58.00, the median of the pre-test score was 60.00, the standard deviation 15.07874, the minimum score in pre-test was 30.00, the maximum or highest score from the students was 90.00, and the summarized total of score was 1160.00.

b. Treatment

The treatment started in second meeting by using google meet to continued their study. The researcher gave the students the material and explain to them about the material.

It shows that the students more enthusiastic to do meet. At first, students on doing pre-test, some of them does not really understand what native speaker said on the podcast. After the researcher

explained about the application and the material, some students started understand.

Another day, the researcher did the class by using group. The researcher also tells the students to listening the podcast minimum three times a week outside of the meeting class. After doing all the treatments, the researcher gave the student post-test. It can be seen below the result of main score of post-test.

It shows on figure 4.4 that the material of the podcast. The researcher gave to the students to listening the podcast and after that the researcher ask the students to reviewing the podcast.

c. Post-Test

The post-test obtained students’ listening rate scores percentage after the researcher gave treatment to the students. The process involved 20 students in the eleventh grade of UPT SMA Negeri 11 Pangkep.

In this section, shows that the student do the post-test after giving treatment have improved. More than half students get Very Good category. It shows below on the table.

Table shows the result of students’ listening score. Base on the data which the researcher obtained from the Post-Test. There were two students in Low category (10%), five students in Fair Category (25%), two students in Good Category (10%), and eleventh students in Very Good category (65%).

Based on the data of Post-Test, as clearly presented the mean of the total post-test score in eleventh grade of UPT SMA Negeri 11 Pangkep was 81.50, the median of the post-test score was 90.00, the standard deviation 13.48488, the minimum score in post-test was 50.00, the maximum or highest score from the students was 100.00, and the summarized total of score was 1630.00.

Related to the students’ listening score above, it can be seen that the result of the post-test was slightly enhance. More than half of the students got the Very Good category.

The table of the mean score of the students’ listening score shows that in the students’ pre-test got 58.00 (Low), and in the post-test was improved to 81.50 (Very Good). The improvement of the research was 40.50%.

It can be assumed that the research about the use of English Podcast Application by using application English British Council to improve students’ comprehension was successful.

3. Hypothesis Testing

A hypothesis is the expected outcomes of this research that stated in chapter II. The hypothesis proposed in this research is “The use of English Podcast Application to improve students’ Listening Comprehension”

The hypothesis was tested by using inferential analysis. In this case, the researcher used a t-test (test of Significance) for the independent sample. The level of significance (α) = 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) = N-1, where N= Number of subject (20 students) then the value of t-table is 1.72913 the test statistical. The analysis for the independent sample was applied, and the following table shows the result of the t-test calculation:

Table 4.7, shows that the score of the t-test is higher than the value of the T-Table (6.44>1.72). It is said that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. The number of significant is 4.72, and it means that there an improvement between the result of the students’ listening comprehension score before and after using English Podcast Application.

B. Discussion

The result of the finding discussed in this section. The discussion aimed to described the use of English Podcast Application to improve students’

listening comprehension. The explanation is based on the result of the pre-test and post-test.

Using podcast as learning media can be alternative and innovative tools that improve the students’ understanding and accomplishment in listening comprehension. Related to the previous researchers’ statement, showed that the use of podcast in listening was an affective media for teaching listening comprehension. The result of the interview indicated most of the students are interested in audio podcast media (Alfian & Lio: 2019).

The result of this research after the researcher had done analyzing the data, the score of the t-test is higher than the value of the t-table (6,44>1.72), the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. It revealed that this research supported the alternative hypothesis,

which stated in chapter II, “There is an improvement to the use of English Podcast Application Students’ Listening Comprehension”. As described in the research background, most of the learners get hard to comprehend when learners learn listening. Still, after getting treatment by listening the podcast in the Application, a minimum two or three times a week, their listening comprehension is improved.

The pre-test was conducted to discover the students’ capability in listening comprehension using True False test based on the Application’s test through google forms. The result showed that the students find it difficult to understand the audio. The students’ mean score in the pre-test was 58.00 which in the Low Category. Related to the data above, it can be said that the listening comprehension of the students is still low.

Then the post-test was utilized to locate the improvement of the students’

listening comprehension after given a set of treatment. It has been conducted using the same media and sample during the pre-test. Based on the data found by the researcher, the students’ listening comprehension is getting better.

Most of the students understood and succeeded in answering the True False questions. It happened because students have learned and listening the Audio Podcast on their own phones. This result indicated that the listening comprehension of the students has been improved. More over the students’

mean score in the post-test was 81.50, which is in the very good category.
