43 2. Description of Research Data

a. Pre-Test Result

To known the ability of the students before giving the treatment without Cooperative Integreted Reading and Composition in Reading Comprehension, the students were giving a pre test that must be done individually.

Teacher asked them to do 20 items multiple choice that consist of the material is deskriptive text, the time given 45 minutes. To measure the Students‟ Reading Comprehension in English materials, the writer tested the students by giving them multiple choice English materials about deskriptive text.

From the data above, it could be found that the highest scores was 80 and the lowest scores was 30. In line with the data, the researcher measured the class interval by using the formula as follows:

K = 1 + 3,3 log n K = 1 + 3,3 log 21 K = 1 + 3,3 x 1,32 K = 1 + 4.36 K = 5, 36 = 5

R = the highest scores – the lowest scores R = 80 - 30

R = 50

45 I =

I = 10

Where:

K = number of interval class

R = distance of maximum and minimum scores I = length of interval class (total of interval class) N = total participants/students

The total of interval class (I) in this research was 10. Then, it was used to measure the data by presenting it on the table of frequencies distribution below:

Table 7

Table of frequency distribution of students‟ pre-test result of reading Comprehension at the eleventh grade of SMP Darul „Ulum Sekampung

No Interval Classes Frequencies Percentages

1 80-89 1 4.76%

2 70 – 79 6 28.6%

3 60 – 69 2 9.5%

4 50 – 59 4 19%

5 40– 49 5 23.8%

6 30– 39 3 14.3%

Total 21 100%

Further, based on the table of frequency distribution above, it could be inferred that from 21 students as the sample of the research, just for about 7

46

students who had got the score similar to or higher than MMC, which is 70.

The data revealed that 3 students got the score between 30 – 39 or as many as 14.3%. Next, there were 5 students got the score between 40 – 49 or as many as 23.8%. There were 4 students who got the score between 50 – 59 or in the other words, as many as 19%. Besides, there were 2 students who got the score between 60 - 69 and 6 students got the score between 70 - 79 in percentage of 28.6% and 40% of each. The last, there were 1 students who got the score between 80 – 89 or as many as 4.76%.

In summary, from the result of pre-test, the researcher found that the students‟ problem was in using ineffective method in teaching learning process. As a result, most of the students got the scores lower than MMC.

b. Post-test Result

After considering the pre-test result of reading comprehension in multiple choise, the researcher conducted the treatment of cooperative integreted reading and composition to help the students getting better understanding of reading comprahension. Be ware of that, the researcher identified the students‟ difficulty in comprehension and offered method cooperative integreted reading and composition to know if there was positive and significant influence of it.

Furthermore, after the students in this class had been given the treatment of method cooperative integreted reading and composition and they had

47

understood already, the researcher gave the post-test to measure their reading comprehension in multiple choise. The result of post-test could be seen below:

From the data above, it could be found that the highest scores was 88 and the lowest scores was 55. In line with the data, the researcher measured the class interval by using the formula as follows:

48 K = 1 + 3,3 log n

K = 1 + 3,3 log 21 K = 1 +3,3 x 1.32 K = 1 + 4.36 K = 5.36 = 5

R = the highest scores – the lowest scores R = 85 – 55

R = 30 I =

I = 6

Where:

K = number of interval class

R = distance of maximum and minimum scores I = length of interval class (total of interval class) N = total participants/students

49

The total of interval class (I) in this research was 6. Then, it was used to measure the data by presenting it on the table of frequencies distribution below:

Table 9

Table of frequency distribution of students‟ post-test result reading comprehension at the eleventh grade of SMP Darul „Ulum Sekampung

1 85 – 90 4 19%

5 61 – 66 3 14.28%

6 55 – 60 4 19%

Total 21 100%

Further, based on the table of frequency distribution above, it could be inferred that from 21 students as the sample of this research, there were 15 students got the score similar to or higher than MMC, which is 70. To be known, there were 4 students who got the score between 55-60 or as many as 19%, and there were 3 students who got the score between 61-66 or as many as 14.28% and there were 6 students who got the score between 67-72 or as many as 28.52%. In addition, there were 2 students who got the score between 73 – 78 or as many as 9.52% and there were 8 students who got the score between 79-84 or as many as 9.52%. The last, there were 4 students who got the score between 85-90 or as many as 19%.

To sum up, the post-test result was categorized into sufficient category even though several students was still lack on cooperative integreted reading

50

and composition inreading comprehension, but on the whole, there was certain influence to help the students get better understanding.
