This makes it easy to search for updated statistics, as many of the results are two to three years old. Having the source information to follow up on also allows libraries to purchase this work every two or three years to save on expenditures for this costly title. The index is fairly comprehensive and provides entry numbers, not page numbers. A separate cumulative index going back to 1989 is provided as part of the set.

When available, annual data are provided from 1946

to 2004, with the historical data chapter covering selected annual data from 1929 to 1948. The reader is provided with an introductory section on how to use the data, and each chapter includes notes and definitions. Unfortunately, the index is weak and lacks useful cross-references.
