Peak flow meters are simple, portable, and relatively inexpensive devices (approximately $15–$35) that facilitate accurate and objective self- monitoring of pulmonary function. Variations in brands can give clinically significant different measurements. Therefore, a single device should be used to compare peak expiratory flow (PEF) values over time. Both forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) and PEF measurements require effort and cooperation on the part of the patient, and patients need to have their technique reevaluated frequently (EPR 3, 2007). Additionally, the accuracy of the device can worsen over time even in patients with techni- cally acceptable maneuvers (EPR 3, 2007). The use of the peak flow meter is described in Chapter 7.
Portable spirometers provide a convenient means for obtaining reliable and reproducible lung function measurements standardized for the patient’s age, race, and gender. These devices can measure forced vital capacity, slow vital capacity, and PEF in addition to the forced expiratory volume in 1 second (Tovar & Gums, 2004). The reproducibility between measurements seems to be better than is seen with peak flow meters, allowing for more accurate assessments of lung function over time (Tovar
& Gums, 2004).
