Boys' and Girls' Club Work

Albany, N. Y. In October we held our annual achievement day program, and seven boys having the highest 4-H club records were sent to Cornell University to attend an encampment. The Committee on Agriculture sponsored a state speaking contest for the Future Farmers' Club. Mathias Smith was declared the winner.

Amarillo, Tex. For the past several years the club has been sponsoring boys' club work, especially interesting the youths in stock raising. All of the exhibitors at the tri-state fair were our guests.

Ames, Iowa. The club sponsored a 4-H achievement show.

Anderson, Ind. We sent eight 4-H club boys and girls to a camp, assisted in the annual farmers' institute and sponsored the 4-H county fair in which boys and girls had 2,263 projects in agriculture, live-stock, canning and domestic science endeavors. There were cash rewards for this fair. Marion Sears, who was sent to the state leadership camp, was awarded a scholar- ship at Purdue University for completing 30 projects in 4-H club work.

Presented a pennant to the winning team in the 4-H boys' baseball con- test.

Antigo, Wis. We had 650 young men and women at our annual 4-H club achievement day.

Astoria, Ore. To give employment to boys and girls during the summer, we organized clubs for city gardening work. A prize was given for the best garden in town. All members of the 4-H club were guests at one of our meetings.

Auburn, Neb. Since there is no county agent, Kiwanis has been sponsoring 4-H club work for several years. Throughout the county we have calf, pig, sewing and canning projects. All farm leaders were guests at one of our meetings. One meeting was held in a rural district.

Auburn, N. Y. Kiwanians were hosts to 300 county 4-H club members and the entire day's program was taken up with achievement awards and other interesting features. Thirty-seven farmers attended our annual ur- ban-rural get-together meeting.

Baltimore, Md. Kiwanians aided every one of the 4-H clubs in the county and Kiwanis Day was observed at the live-stock show.

Batesville, Ark. Our club furnished 18 brood sows to the junior farmers in this vicinity. One meeting was held in the rural area and all proceeds were used to help purchase a steam pressure canner.

Bend, Ore. Sent one 4-H club boy to school at Oregon State College. The club helped promote a county fair and sponsored all forms of 4-H club work.

Birmingham, Ala. Over 1,000 boys and girls attended our annual 4-H club rally, and donations were made to carry on farm projects and a cotton exhibit.

Bluffton, Ind. Four delegates were sent to the junior leadership training camp, and we assisted the county agent in putting on a corn husking contest.

Bremen, Ind. An agricultural exhibit, including grains, potatoes, fruit, sew- ing and cooking projects, was held for the farm boys and girls. Rural youths entered potato and corn projects and four boys were selected to attend a leadership training camp. We held a joint meeting with the farm bureau members.

Brooksville, Fla. Kiwanians secured the cooperation of banks so farmers could be interested in raising pure-bred stock. We purchased 40 Jersey bulls, cows and yearlings for the boys on the farms. About 20 acres were pledged for a strawberry contest.

Chicopee, Mass. One thousand tomato plants were given to the 4-H club members. A total enrollment of 1,400 boys and girls entered our 4-H work in 1932. Because of financial conditions the city was unable to fi- nance playground endeavors, so many of the boys and girls enjoyed gard- ening and canning projects. The value of produce raised in 1932 exceeded

$25,000.00. Prizes were presented to winners in all the 4-H club projects.

East Aurora, N. Y. At our achievement day meeting, 4-H club members and their dads were present. All winners were awarded medals. Twenty-eight farmers were guests at one of our meetings.

Fairmount, Ind. Four students with the highest agricultural grades were given the opportunity of a special two-weeks' course in farm methods.

Frankfort, Ind. The second annual seed corn contest interested 50 boys.

Each planted an acre and carefully watched over the experiment, and prizes were awared to the winners at a corn show. Youths were sent to a leadership camp.

Franklin, Ind. One thousand guests were present at our annual 4-H club picnic. Nine leaders were sent to the state 4-H encampment.

Frederick, Md. Our main work is to interest rural residents in stock judging, rural home programs, and a five year agricultural plan for this territory.

Trophy cups were awarded the 4-H club members in a stock judging contest.

Gainesville, Fla. Scholarships were awarded 14 boys so they might have the benefits derived from an agricultural short course, and we assisted negro youths so they might receive agricultural instruction at Tallahassee. The club participated in the establishment of a 4-H camp, and we also held a farmers' week.

Gallup, N. M. Uuder the direction of Kiwanian Homer Powers the county won the state championship in the 4-H domestic science contest. A com- mittee was appointed to raise funds to send two girls to Denver to attend the stock show.

Galveston, Tex. Sent a boy and a girl to attend a short .course at College Station, Texas. One meeting was held in the farm district with over 100 in attendance.

Glens Falls, N. Y. There were 183 boys and girls enrolled in our potato proj- ect, and we had over 80 exhibits which excelled those of other years.

Grinnell, Iowa. The 4-H club fair with 209 entries and over $700.00 in prizes was held in August. All winners were entertained at a meeting.

Hartford City, Ind. Sponsored a corn contest and later a husking bee. Forty youths exhibited the 60 best ears of corn raised in this vicinity. A farm banquet was held in March, and we were entertained later in the year by the farm bureau.

Huntsville, Ala. vVe assisted in a 4-H club rally which was attended by over 1,000 needy boys and girls. Our major agricultural objectives were con- cerned with everyone having thorough information about the agriculture college, the knowledge of marketing of farm products, and the necessity of 4-H boys' and girls' projects.

Independence, Mo. With the County Farm Bureau, we sponsored a 4-H club show and all winners were entered at the state fair in Sedalia and the American Royal Live-Stock Exposition in Kansas City.

Indiana Kiwanis District. The junior leadership training course, sponsored by the Indiana Kiwanis District, was held June 6 to 10 at Shakamak Park with an enrollment of 336 boys and girls from all parts of the state. The agricultural extension department of Purdue University cooperated with the district in this work. The total cost for each leader for the entire camp period was about $4.00. Each Kiwanis club was responsible for the traveling expenses of the boys and girls. Fifty-four Kiwanis clubs sent representatives and participated in financing of the project. This activity gave the Indiana Kiwanis District the opportunity of contacting with nearly 6,000 farm boys and girls in the state.

Kingsport, Tenn. The club purchased three thrift cookers for canning pur- poses. These were placed in the rural communities, and through arrange- ments with farm women's organizations, the club received one-sixth of the canned foods. All food was turned over to the city relief organiza- tions for distribution among the poor. Tested seed corn was given to farm boys and we enjoyed a picnic supper served by the ladies of a near-by rural community.

Logansport, Ind. Participated in the promotion of all 4-H club activities and sent four farm youths to the leadership training camp.

Malone, N. Y. Fifty-five boys and girls attended one of our luncheons. Each Kiwanian was assigned to one or more of these youngsters with the hope of encouraging them in their endeavors. An interest was taken in the county fair and practically one-half of all the 4-H club members had exhibits and were counted among the prize winners. At no time did a 4-H club member have produce for which there was not a ready market.

Manitowoc, Wis. Four hundred 4-H members and their leaders in this coun- ty were entertained by Kiwanis. Our club has been the pioneer in urban- rural get-togethers, the first meeting having been held eight years ago.

Kiwanians were in charge of the annual 4-H club banquet and achieve- ment meeting with 350 in attendance. Farmers were organized for dairy and grain projects and we gave our support to a successful county fair.

Memphis, Tenn. Financial aid was given so that seven members of the 4-H club could secure Jersey calves. The boys are required to keep a record of their projects and all profits will be applied to the purchase price of their stock.

Miami, Fla. The Committee on Agriculture continued its supervision over the agricultural class in high school. The work consists of financing practical farm projects. A survey was made to reveal the value of agricul- ture, horticulture and animal husbandry in the county.

Milwaukee, Wis. Kiwanis trophies were awarded to the winners in the agri- cultural, horticultural and hoine economics contests held in connection with the mid-winter fair. Eight leaders in 4-H county club work were awarded scholarships for c>. short course at the University of Wisconsin.

One hundred farmers were guests at our annual good fellowship meeting.

Modesto, Calif. A prize of $100.00, which is a scholarship award, was given to the 4-H club member showing the best results in school work. Made it possible for SO youths to go to Davis, California. Kiwanians were in attendance at a farm picnic and all farm bureau members were guests at one of our meetings.

Mt. Airy, N. C. Farm boys were given 21 thorough-bred brood sows and we hope this will improve the quality of hogs raised for market. Through the efforts of the club, 125,000 pounds of Lespedeza seed were sown in the county, and we continue to stress the value of raising legumes for soil improvement and the necessity of diversifying crops.

New Richmond, Wis. The 4-H club fair for the county, in which over 400 boys and girls had exhibits, was the enterprise .of the Kiwanis club.

Newton, N. C. Onr main work is the sponsoring of all 4-R club projects in the county. Adequate prizes and rewards are given for the winners in all the projects.

Ogden, Utah. The Committee on Agriculture is sponsoring a forestry club among the boys, and all members of the Future Farmers of America are encouraged in their projects. Cash prizes were awarded 35 agricultural students.

Peru, Neb. Our activities are concerned with 4-H club garden, pig, sewing, and other projects.

Philippi, W. Va. Assisted the 4-H club in gathering magazines for country distribution. A series of rural meetings were held throughout the sum- mer and early fall months.

Plymouth, Ind. Six 4-H club boys were sent to the state leadership train- ing school.

Portland, Ore. Transportation was furnished for 150 boys so they could go to the Mount Hood National Forest and join the 4-H club groups. Ar- ranged so a Kiwanian could take part in the State Grange Convention program. We entertained all the 4-H club winners of the Pacific Interna- tional Live-Stock Exposition and also arranged so the three winning 4-H girls from Oregon could be entertained by Chicagoans during the Na- tional Stock Exposition.

Reedsburg, Wis. Sponsored a seed judging contest, and had farmers given the latest information on fodder and crops. Entertainment was provided for 4-H club members and their families.

Regina, Sask. Fifty-eight boys entered our seed grain contest.

Ryan, Okla. Our main endeavor is to encourage diversified farming. Mem- bers of the 4-H club were given ten registered pigs. A minstrel show toured the rural districts and gave free entertainments.

Shawnee, Okla. The pig project continues to be a worthy enterprise. Start- ing with five pure-blooded pigs, there have now been 115 of these animals distributed in the interest of pure-bred production. We shall urge some- thing similar with calves and chickens in the future.

Spartanburg, S. C. Four thousand high grade baby chicks were selected for 4-H club boys. All boys who won diplomas at Clemson College were

our guests. /

Syracuse, N. Y. Our sixth annual achievement day for the 4-H club was held at Syracuse University with 400 farm boys and girls in attendance.

Championship medals were awarded to the individuals with the winning projects.

Tillamook, Ore. The club is considering building a 4-H dormitory at the fair grounds. Achievement pins were awarded to all winners in the 4-H club projects. All children of the county were entertained at fair time.

Tuscumbia, Ala. Entertained all the 4-H club boys and girls of the county at a barbecue and picture show, and food was served to 850 youths and over 150 of their parents. State 4-H club winners were entertained at one of our meetings.

Wausau, Wis. Thirty-two boys spent a week attending a farm shop course.

This was the first year for this activity and interest is constantly in- creasing.

Wooster, Ohio. A 4-H club banquet was held for 86 boys and girls who participated in the annual projects. Medals were awarded the winners.
