PARTICIPANT COMMENTS

A. 4.(a) Suggestions regarding integration of leadership training for club presidents-elect and the more operationally-oriented program offered by lieutenant governors:

*

More specific detail of district goals could be integrated with individual club's goals and objectives, creating a consistent program for achievement.

*

The training program offered by the lieutenant governor was not worth the time it took to attend. We went on our own from the information in the president's manual.

i< Too much psychology was directed at this program, rather than basics.

·*

I enjoyed the leadership program but feel I needed more emphasis on operations.

*

I am not sure what this refers to - I didn't receive any operational training from the lieutenant governor.

*

The lieutenant governor should have a program w~th the same structures taught to the new presidents. Although this would be somewhat repetitive, the

lieutenant governor would, as a result, know·more about the strengths and weaknesses of the clubs in his division.

i~ I needed both; however_, older club officers may not have needed both.

*

Did not receive much orientation on the basics of operating a club from the lieutenant governor.

*

Many new presidents need to be educated more on how the Kiwanis structure functions at the local, division, and district level.

B. 3. Please offer any comments or suggestions you may have regarding those program elements which need to be strengthened or deleted:

*

More role playing needed; more time placed on evaluation.

*

Three most important were goal setting, action planning, communicating with others.

*

More real live Kiwanis situations in dealing with communication with others.

*

Communication, very interesting and added interest to the program; action planning got cold before we got into the year - later conference would help.

*

More focus on motivation; practical application is the key.

*

Managing and motivating - need more time and discussion and suggestions for motivating members during the entire 12 months.

*

Outcome thinking is very important! Communication needed throughout life.

*

The president's kit should be gone over during this program.

*

For one-year term of office - not too useffll.

*

Very useful!

*

Please continue - it is a well-balanced approach to leadership.

* The outcome thinking was dry and boring. Some concrete examples or games should be implemented into the presentation.

*

More coverage of material in president's manual needed; have in hands of president prior to such meetings.

*

Program as presented was very beneficial.

*

Bring in experts in these fields from local educational institutions.

*

A guestion and answer period to a panel of past presidents would help give factual information to the incoming presidents.

*

Strengthen work on actual administrative aspects of running a club. Club secretaries could be included.

*

Programs were too general; more specifics would be beneficial.

EXHIBIT G, p. 4 -2-

4. Are there other topics, e.g. delegating, problem-solving, etc., which would be of significant value to participants if added to the program?

Please list and comment:

* Problem-solving on specific Kiwanis issues with recommendations on the source of information and more emphasis on lieutenant governor's role as to his interaction with club presidents.

*

Provide a handout to be read at a later date of expectations of what a president is required to do and his responsibilities.

*

Kiwanis goals and expectations, i.e. participation in foundations, major emphasis, goals, and convention.

*

Everything presented was excellent and relevant.

*

Problem-solving is very important - Membership and Retention.

*

Membership and Retention; functions to expect during administrative year;

functions I'm expected to attend; fund raising, specifically for the administration account to attend functions and the costly conventions.

1~ We have trouble getting members for interclubbing.

*

Actual breakdown of committees.

* Delegating

*

A short presentation on organization and services of International would be of benefit to this group. Also, we needed an agenda of important calendar dates for the coming year.

*

Public speaking; case studies.

*

Would like to see training expanded to the Board of Directors and lesser officers since this is main source of club presidents and leaders.

1~ How to recruit, in depth.

GENERAL COMMENTS:

*

Special difficulties exist in clubs composed primarily of retirees. Retirees often have their priorities and interests well established, so it becomes a special challenge to convince them to try something new.

*

I see a need to offer earlier training and a stronger degree of training to those who will be leaders of their clubs. Let's not wait until they are there and into their administration to emphasize this. KLE should be continued and

possibly expanded to include 1st vice presidents as they evaluate their president's administration - never too mucn training.

*

I feel that one of the largest weaknesses of this program is that at present there is no structure for the participants to become the trainers for the future.

It would be cost effective if Kiwanis had training sessions so that there could be facilitators for each district. This would also enhance one of the hidden agendas of the program - that is the idea of fellowship with other Kiwanis leaders and "rubbing elbows" with the "big wigs". I would like to discuss this further at the international convention, if you are interested.

("Ziggy" Zago,;ren, Massachusetts)

* Ideal length - three days, if most could afford the time.
