―I use YouTube. However, it's important to approach YouTube with a critical mindset and verify the credibility and reliability of the content and creators. Not all videos on YouTube are created by experts, so it's essential to cross-reference information and rely on reputable sources when studying or conducting research.‖52
P3 stated:
―I use several types of social media but what I often use is YouTube and also tiktok. Because both of them make it possible to study English with native speakers in depth.‖53

"You tube, because on YouTube there is a lot of content that can improve English speaking skills."54

"YouTube because I like to learn through videos, and Instagram to know the news in other countries, and their memes are funny."55

―I usually use YouTube by watching some videos that relate to speaking practice. Then I currently like to use Tik-Tok, because there are many content creators creating videos that invite us to speak English directly, such as speaking challenges, Q&A with native speakers, etc.‖56
Apart from YouTube, Instagram, and Tik-Tok, social media such as Spotify (music application), WhatsApp, Facebook, and Telegram are also used by some students as their platforms in learning speaking. As they said below.
P1 stated:
"I use spotify. Because I can hear all of the music there and of course I can try to sing or imitate the songs and practice my speaking skills.‖57
P5 stated:
―I use WhatsApp to practice speaking. Sometimes I send messages or voice messages in English."58

for kicking by commenting on other statuses or joining a call or maybe making a voice note, and it's really much fun than actually speaking in class.‖59
Based on the results of the interview above, most of the students use social media of YouTube and followed by Instagram and Tik-Tok applications as a platform to improve their speaking skills. They consider that those social media are the platforms that are very helpful to practice the speaking with some features provided in it. Those applications also effective as well as flexible and easy to use as a medium for learning speaking outside of class. Especially in today's era, where social media is an almost inseparable part of life.
2. What roles do social media have on improving students' speaking skills at UIN Mataram?
The interview was conducted to get more and in-depth information about the role of social media in improving students' speaking skills at UIN Mataram. Based on the results of the interviews, all students answered that social media has its own role in improving speaking skills.
This means that students answer or respond positively that social media has a role for students if it is used as a medium to improve speaking skills.

When they were asked about the role of social media in improving speaking skills, they said that social media had improved their speaking skills so far, such as they could watch speaking videos, interact directly with native speakers, they could imitate what was said in the video, make q&a and others. As they mentioned in the following interview results.
P1 said:
―Yes. Let's say social media is really important for speaking skills.
By own mind using social media really improve my speaking skill because for example like spotify I can hear the song and I can try the song and of course my speaking skill will be improved.‖60
P2 said:
―It's important to note that while social media can be a valuable resource for improving speaking skills, it should be used in combination with other learning methods. Direct interaction with native speakers, formal language instruction, and structured speaking practice should also be incorporated to achieve a well- rounded development of speaking abilities.‖61
P3 said:
"Learning support tools are the roles taken by social media in the process of learning English."62

―Social media plays a role in helping to improve my speaking skills. With social media, we can practice whenever and wherever we want. In addition, learning to speak through social media is also fun, so learning to speak doesn't seem boring.‖64
P7 said:
―Social media plays a dominant role in English language learning because it provides opportunities for English language learners to improve their kicking and similarly, by interacting with many people who use English as their language, to read new texts and phrases to improve their vocabulary.‖65
Considering that the learning process in formal classes has a certain time limit, many of the students have their own initiatives in using social media as entertainment media and also learning media in this case learning speaking. So social media can be a very important and effective platform and at the same time can be a solution for students who want to improve their speaking skills by utilizing social media platforms to

improve speaking skills outside of class. As expressed by the following interviewees.
P1 said:
"Yes it's really important because outside the classroom we can meet everyone and we can learn new things and of course social media really gives the effect to improve speaking skills."66
P2 said:
―Social media can be a valuable tool for improving speaking skills, it's important to use it mindfully and with discernment. Learners should actively seek out quality language learning resources, engage with native speakers or language enthusiasts who can provide accurate feedback, and balance social media usage with other forms of language learning, such as structured speaking practice with teachers or language partners."67
P3 said:
"Of course it is very important especially now is the era where technology is very sophisticated and social media is like a friend, so it must be used."68
P5 said:
"Yes, using social media to learn speaking outside of class is important because it can help us maximize our learning."69

In addition, from the results of interviews conducted by researcher, researcher found that students had their own strategies in using social media as a platform for learning speaking such as giving comments using English, self-talk, sending voice messages in English, imitating songs English songs and others. Here are some of the informants' answers.

"My strategy is we have to always practice our speaking skills by using social media because if we want to be like native speakers so we have to always practice our speaking skills."71

"Recording the material that I got then practiced directly."72

―My strategy is that first I watch the video then I try to follow what is in the video, sometimes I also try to talk to myself through the mirror‖73

―Just watching reels, chatting, and commenting on someone's post.‖75

Furthermore, they mentioned that they really enjoyed learning speaking using social media. Even though sometimes they also have certain obstacles, some of them have no significant problems with using social media as a platform for learning speaking. These problems are usually mild and easy to overcome. Overall, they are very comfortable in using social media to learn and improve their speaking skills. As they stated in the following interview.

―I enjoy that because it can increase self-motivation and time management and provide authenticity and cultural context. The

problems are like limited speaking practice, lack of immersion, technical issues, and limited interaction and feedback."77
P4 said:
"Really enjoy, for problems maybe more to the internet quota."78
P3 said:
―Really enjoyed of course. But some obstacles do exist, such as distraction from some entertainment content and sometimes problematic signals.‖79
P5 said:
―I sometimes enjoy it, but sometimes I also get bored doing it.
Actually there is no problem with social media, the problem is more with me. I sometimes lazy to practice speaking.‖80

"Yes of course I agree and I really enjoy using social media to learn speaking and I don't have a problem with that."81

"The problem is just if we got jokes, our friends here sometimes don't get the jokes."82

As mentioned in chapter I, social media has many benefits in helping one's activities such as transactions, communication and so on.
Likewise in the learning process in the era of rapid technological development as it is today. Based on the interview results obtained, all informants agreed that social media was very useful for them in improving their speaking skills in this era. As stated by some of the following informants.
P1 stated:
"The advantage of social media like one of them is that we can get easier to learn speaking and we can get more or really faster to get the information from social media especially to get speaking material."84
P2 stated:
―The advantages of social media for learning speaking, we can enhance our language skills, gain exposure to real-life language use, build connections with speakers of the target language, and access a diverse range of resources and support. It's important to

approach social media as a supplementary tool and combine it with other language learning methods for a well-rounded learning experience.‖85

"Add some new knowledge that is sometimes not discussed in class, not found in books. As well as getting knowledge from native speakers of the language."86

"The benefits besides improving speaking skills also train confidence in speaking English."87
P5 stated:
"Social media is useful for learning speaking outside of class.
Besides that, learning speaking using social media is also quite fun.‖88

"The advantage is that we are updated on what is happening on Earth today."89

"The advantages are that we can learn everywhere and every time, it's easy to access, not boring, and we will get a lot of knowledge that we never get from our teachers at school."91
The role of social media on improving students‘ speaking can be categorized into three categories based on the interview results of this research that stated by some interviewees below namely:
a. Means of communication
P5: I use WhatsApp to learn speaking because I feel that this platform is used most often in daily life. Apart from that, this platform provides very complete features. We can send messages in English, send voice messages to practice speaking, or call to practice speaking.92
P7: By utilize social media to learn speaking would be a very good choice because it is more practical and efficient because it will be easier for students to interact with native speakers directly without having to think about the costs.93

P4: I think it's very good, because now 90% of people use social media as communication tool as well as a learning tool and it makes it very easy for someone when they want to improve their English speaking skills.94

To conclude, all students agreed that social media has a role in improving students' speaking skills, namely by interacting directly virtually with native speakers and also practicing their speaking skills whenever and wherever they want, and the features provided by social media, of course. The role of social media can be divided into three categories on improving students speaking skill namely, means of communication, interactive trigger tool, and collaborative tool. In addition, students also agree that learning speaking using social media outside of formal classes is very important and effective to do to improve English skills, especially speaking. Of course, with the methods and strategies of each user, such as recording and then imitating, listening to English songs, commenting on someone's posts, and looking for partners through social media to practice. In addition, all students also agreed that learning speaking using social media has many advantages such as being practical, easy to access, and comfortable to use for learning. Even so, students also have small problems such as being lazy, limited quotas, and sometimes constrained by signals that don't support them. But overall, students agreed that they really enjoyed learning speaking using social media.
