After conducting the observation, the researcher conducted an interview with some students to support the data from the observation. The researcher will conduct research with the topic or data source of undergraduate students majoring in the Department of English, Faculty of Education and Teacher Education in the academic year 2023/2024. In addition, the researcher chose this location because based on the researcher's observations, students majoring in English are among the active users of cell phones and social media, making it very closely related to the research to be conducted.

Moleong stated that observation is a social interaction that lasts for a long time between the researcher and the subject, during which data in the form of field notes is collected systematically and used without interruption.44 The type of observation used is participant observation and non-participant observation. of participants. In conducting this research, the researcher used the technique of passive participation, where the researcher does not fully participate in the activities of the subject under study. The researcher will observe some students to get an illustration of how students use social media as a platform to improve their speaking skills, which social media they use in learning speaking and also what types of speaking materials they use in learning speaking. and so on.

First, the researcher arranges the field notes of the observation, then the next step is that the researcher conducts interviews with various informants to obtain more in-depth and specific data and information related to the phenomenon under study. The reason why the researcher uses this triangulation technique is because the researcher believes that this technique is faster to check the validity of the data in this study. In order to gain additional in-depth and specific information, the researcher continued to conduct interviews using both previously encountered and new data sources.

Students usually watch a video through YouTube, and from the video, students are more interested in practicing speaking or practice directly after watching the video. In addition, the researcher also found that there are some advantages of social media that students have because social media is a platform that is easy to access. It can be accessed anytime and anywhere and using social media especially for learning speaking is fun and many students enjoy using it as social media is a platform that is very attractive and loved by many people.

Based on the observation conducted, the researcher found that the students watch the content or video blogs of Fiki Naki, Dale Philip and the like. The effect of social media on learning to speak based on the observation can improve and also increase students' speaking skills. This can be seen from the students' reaction when they are told many things related to speaking skills in that content, when they talk to their friend in English, they produce the words in English so confidently and comfortably and they look so looking nice and cheerful. to enjoy.

Many students use applications that provided the videos in it, such as YouTube or similar applications, as platforms to learn and improve speaking skills. When they open the social media to learn to speak, they see the video related to the speech and after they watch the video. This also happened in the process of learning speaking where nowadays students use social media as the best choice to learn speaking tool because all students have their own social media nowadays.

The current research is about the role of social media as platforms to improve students' speaking skills in the digital age. The current research is qualitative descriptive, so the answer to the problem statements is explained here based on the analysis of the data. After conducting the research and analyzing the data, this research finally found that social media like YouTube, Tik-Tok and instagram are most often accessed by the students as their platforms to improve speaking skills.

Besides that, social media also provides a lot of fun and related needs for students, so that is why students can. Besides YouTube, there are also some social media used by the students such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Tik-Tok, Telegram and Spotify. Based on the result of this study, the researcher further concludes that the role of social media as platforms to improve students' speaking is the one based on the supported tools found in the.

So students will be easy to practice anytime and anywhere and thus students can improve their speaking skills. The researcher also concludes that there are three categories of social media roles in improving students' speaking skills, namely communication tools, interactive stimulating tool and collaborative tool. Also, looking at the video related to speaking skill, practice through social networks is the strategy used by students to improve their speaking skill.
