This research aimed at finding out how the cognitive strategy improve the students literal comprehension and interpretative comprehension at the Eighth Gradethe Students’ of SMPN 1 Bontonompo, Gowa.
This research used apre-experimental research. The researcher had conducted a treatment, where the class consisted of ten meetings. The population of this study is the eight grade the students of SMPN 1 Bontonompo, Gowain the academic year of 2016/2017. The researcher used Total Sampling Technique. The research instrument used narrative test.
The research findings indicated that achievement of the eight grade of SMPN 1 Bontonompo, Gowawas improved after using CognitiveStrategy. It was proven by mean score of Reading Comprehension in terms of literal Comprehension in pre-test was 63.93, post-test was76.66 and the improvement ofLiteral Comprehension was 19.91%. While, the pre-test of interpretative was 49.66, post-test was 65.33 and the improvement ofInterpretative was 31.55%. The result of statistical analysis of t-test with degree of freedom, where N=30 (df=29) at the level significance 0.05 indicated that there were significance of Literal (7.9>
1.699) and Interpretative(3.9> 1.699). Based on the research finding, the researcher concluded that the cognitive strategy improved the students’ literal comprehension and interpretative comprehension significantly.
