vi ABSTRACT

SRI PURWANINGSI. 2016. “Using News Retelling Technique To Improve The Students’ Speaking Ability At The Second Grade of SMAN 1 Baraka Enrekang.( An Experimental Study ), under the thesis of English Education Department the Faculty of Teachers Training and Education, Makassar Muhammadiyah University (guided by Erwin Akib and Nurdevi Bte Abdul ).

This research aimed to find out the improvement of the students’ speaking accuracy in term of vocabulary and grammar. To find out the improvement, the researcher used pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test design. The population was the second grade students’ of SMAN 1 Baraka Enrekang.The sample was taken by purposive sampling technique and the total number of sample was 25 students.

It employed of six meetings (one meeting for pre-test, four meetings for treatment, and one meeting for post-test). It employed speaking test which oral in semi structural interview form as instrument. The research findings indicated that the application of news retelling technique was effective in improving the students’ speaking ability. It was proven by mean score of speaking accuracy in term of vocabulary in pre-test was 54 and post-test was 68.4.The improvement of vocabulary was 26.66%. While, the mean score of speaking accuracy in term of grammar in pre-test was 51.2 and post-test was 66.6.The improvement of grammar was 30.08%. The value of t-test in speaking accuracy in term of vocabulary was 7.87 and grammar was 11.75. where , N=25 (df=24) at the level of significant 0.05 and t-table value was 1.711.It means that, the result of t-test was greater than t-table. Related to the results of gained data, it can be concluted thatused of News Retelling Technique improved the students’ speaking ability.
