A dissertation from the English Education Department Faculty of Teacher Education and Training University of Muhammadiyah Makassar.

The purpose of the research was to find out the improvement of students' performance in writing ability through Dictogloss technique in terms of language use and mechanics. The researcher used a pre-experimental design with a group pre-test and a group post-test design. The subject of the research was tenth grade students in SMA Muhammadiyah 4 Makassar academic year 2013-2014.

The result of the data analysis showed that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test. The research findings indicated that Dictogloss technique was effective in improving the students' writing ability in terms of language use and mechanics. It can be concluded that there was a significant difference between the students' writing ability before and after the use of dictogloss technique writing process in improving the students'.

The lecturers and staff of University Muhammadiyah Makassar for their guidance during the years of my study.

INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION

Background

It is used to communicate with other people and also to express feelings and opinions. Writing is the activity of creating graphic symbols, not only is speaking more than making sounds, but the symbols must be arranged to form sentences, although again people can say "writing" if people are merely making lists of words such as shopping lists. In writing, students need a good idea to create a composition or written material.

For a writing subject, students need to have an idea of what they are going to write and how much they know about the topic, sometimes they need to choose one topic and then decide on one topic, finding the right word to express the idea with proper grammar, capitalization and punctuation. Most of the students still made many mistakes in writing such as ungrammatical sentence, wrong paragraph organization and wrong choice of words. By using dictogloss, the teacher can help the students to use their grammatical resources to reconstruct the text and to be aware of their shortcomings and needs.

Since the text is read at a natural speed, students cannot write down every word, but only key words and must understand the meaning and use their knowledge of grammar to reconstruct it. Based on the explanation above, the researcher undertakes to conduct a study under the title "The Effectiveness of Dictogloss Technique to Improve the Students' Writing Ability at the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Muhammadiyah 4 Makassar".

Research Questions

Dictogloss is a great way to practice grammar and vocabulary as students work on a combination of meaning and form, making grammar learning more purposeful and meaningful (Murray, 2001:4). How important is the difference in students' achievements in writing ability in terms of using language and mechanics through the dicto-gloss technique.

Previous Related Research Findings

  • Dictogloss Technique

Rauf (2013) conducted a research entitled "Improving students' listening comprehension using the dictolingual technique". It has been found that teaching listening comprehension using the dictogloss technique can improve students' listening comprehension, especially in dialogue that focuses on vocabulary and comprehension. He found that the dictogloss technique is effective in improving students' speaking ability in the tenth grade students of SMA 14 Makassar.

Byrne says vocabulary is an area that gives students different types of learning problems, including spelling. Lidiman (2010: 3) states that the dictogloss technique is a skills-embedded language learning technique in which students work together to create a reconstructed version of a text that is read to them. The dictogloss technique helps students generate ideas that make it easier for students to write and teaches students.

Vasiljevic (2010:1) states that dictogloss is a classroom dictation activity where students listen to a passage, note key words and then work together to create a reconstructed version of the text. Dictogloss technique is a technique where the teacher reads a short text and the students make short notes and then try to reconstruct the text in groups. The teacher introduces and leads the students into the topic of the text, language focus and the difficult vocabulary.

At first, students only listen to the text in order to orient themselves to the topic. After the first dictation, students are asked to think about what the text is about. Students do not have to use exactly the same words as in the original text, but the meaning should not be different and the text should be grammatically correct.

In this phase, the students compare their text with other versions and with the original version. Ideally, the original text should only be seen by the students after their own versions have been analysed. The students may be asked to check their reconstruction (self-assessment) or the reconstruction of another group (peer assessment).

Since it is communicative and directly addresses the needs of the students, it is motivating. If it is a revision of a structure, it is interesting to see if the students can identify it when they listen and then apply it again in the reconstruction.

Conceptual Framework

The PROCESS refers to the classroom interaction where the researcher implements the dictogloss technique in relation to instruction.

In the first meeting, the researcher explained to the students about the dictogloss technique and talking about goal setting. The researcher gave the students a few minutes to discuss the text and construct the text. The researcher asked the students to present the result of the discussion and the other groups gave the correction.

The researcher gave students the opportunity to summarize the learning and extend the learning. The researcher administered post-tests to know the students' progress in writing after giving treatment in five sessions. The result of the percentages of the students' scores were tabulated and classified as the following classification.

Besides, the result of data analysis of the students' pre-test and post-test. It means that learning with the dictogloss technique is effective in improving the writing ability of the students. It can be concluded from the result that the writing skills of most students in the pre-test are reasonable.

Based on the result, it can be concluded that the effectiveness of the dictogloss technique is able to improve students' writing ability where the post-test score is higher than the pre-test score (post-test>pre-test). The description of the data collected through the written test is explained in the previous section and shows that the students' writing ability has improved. The use of the Dictogloss technique is effective in improving students' writing ability for language use and mechanics in news.

Based on the result of the written test, the students' ability to write improves. It means that the use of Dictogloss technique is effective in improving students' writing ability in language use and mechanics component. It means that there is a significant difference between the students' writing ability before and after using the Dictogloss technique in the writing process, it is improved or it can also be said that the use of the dictogloss technique is effective in improving the writing ability of to the students.

Looking at the comparison of the students' score based on the result of the pre-test and the post-test, the researcher can conclude that there is an improvement in the results. There is a significant difference between the writing skills of the students before and after using the dictogloss technique during the writing process.
