Scope of the Research

Some Previous Related Research Findings

From the previous related research findings above, the researcher found that there are some similarities with this research. From the statements above, the researcher concludes that the use of closed caption method is an effective method to improve reading comprehension. Previous researchers' results can contribute as advance information to the researcher actually believing that there will also be an opportunity to implement the Closed Caption Method to improve students' reading comprehension.

In this research, the research wants to use closed captioning as a pedagogical tool in the reading class to know the effectiveness of closed captioning.

Some Pertinent ideas

Reading Comprehension

Thus skimming accurs when the readers look, the eyes quickly embark on a life of writing. Richards (1985) argues that different types of reading comprehension are distinguished based on the readers' goals and the type of reading they use. Inferential comprehension: Reading to find information not explicitly stated in the passage.

Critical or evaluative understanding: Reading to compare information in a passage with the reader's own knowledge and values. It is about the skill of recognizing the moral or concept that the passage clarifies to the readers.

Closed Caption Method

McGrath : 2012 Access to captioned video and other media for students with hearing impairments can be challenging due to the increased use of online curriculum resources to support the curriculum, and also a need to upskill teachers in the use of captions. There are several basic elements that students who are deaf or hard of hearing require in order to be fully included in the teaching and learning process. These include access to subtitles for multimedia curriculum support materials and clear teacher- and peer-led instruction.

Classrooms, by their design and nature, can be noisy places and interventions are needed. McGrath : 2012 The Closed Caption Method is a very straightforward initiative suitable for use in mainstream schools and specialist settings nationwide.

RESEARCH METHOD

Population and Sample a. Population

The population of this research was that of the students in class X of SMA Pesantren Putri Yatama Mandiri, which consisted of 2 classes, so the population was about 40 students. The researcher selected XA class students of SMA Pesantren Putri Yatama Mandiri as a sample of this research. By choosing the class that is the English teacher that the researcher already knows, it was easier to collect the data.

Research Variables and Indicators 1. Research Variables

Research Instrument

Data Collection

The result of the students' performance in the pre- and post-test was compared to find out the success or failure of the students' reading comprehension by using closed captioning method. Clearly identify the main idea by providing strong evidence, details related to the main idea. The answer must be based on the correct passage and supported with information and/or example from the passage as asked for the question.

The information in the answer is correct, but more supporting information and/or examples based on the passage are needed. The information in the answer may be correct and based on the passage, but it may not be written clearly or precisely enough. 1 The answer may be incomplete, may have several errors or inaccuracies, and may not fulfill the task required by the question.

Data Analysis

Where: X%C = Percentage of correct score R = Number of correct answers T = Total number of items on test. The table of means (1) t-test value is less than t-table value, the null hypothesis is accepted while the alternative hypothesis is rejected, and (2) t-test value is equal to greater than t-table value, the null hypothesis is rejected while the alternative was accepted. The results of the research covered with the result of the data collected through the test.

  • Hypothesis Testing

The researcher used Closed captioning method in treatment to see the improvement students' literal understanding and there was improvement in pre-test to post-test. The data analysis shows the students' average score improved from pre-test to post-test. This is proven by students' average score in post-test is 70.75 and it is classified as quite good.

It means that using closed captioning method is effective to improve students' word-to-word comprehension in reading. The researcher used the closed captioning method in the treatment to see the students' improvement in inferential understanding and there was improvement in pre-test to post-test. Data analysis shows that the average score of students improves from pre-test to post-test.

It is proven by the average score of the students in the posttest is 65.75 and it is classified as fair. It means that the use of closed captioning method is effective to improve students' inferential comprehension in reading. Before the treatment, students' pre-test score for literal comprehension is 49.5 and inferential comprehension is 44.25.

It means that after using the closed captioning method, students' reading comprehension improves. Given the fact that, students' reading comprehension can improve after treatment using the closed captioning method. This means that there is a significant difference between students' reading comprehension before and after the use of closed captioning in teaching reading.

Discussion

With this treatment, the researcher found that many students still had the same problem as in the pre-test. In the second treatment, the researcher helped the students solve their problem by giving some ways. The researcher gave the same kind of text with different titles as the first and second treatment.

Based on the above finding when using the closed captioning method in the classroom, the data collected through the test as explained in the previous findings section showed that students' literal comprehension improves significantly. The students' posttest score is higher than the students' average pretest score. Based on the above finding when using the closed captioning method in the classroom, the test data collected as explained in the previous findings section showed that the students' inferential understanding improves significantly.

The student's post-test score is higher than the student's average score. The description of the data collected during the pre-test showed that the students' reading comprehension was poor. In the first treatment, the researcher started to explain what reading comprehension means, in literal understanding through the Closed Caption method.

Smith says that inference, or reading between the lines, requires a higher level of thinking ability because questions in this inference category deal with what is not directly stated in the text, but is suggested or implied. He may define inferential as something that follows from inference, something that is not directly stated but suggested in the statement, a logical conclusion that follows from the statement. Thus, the writer concludes that there has been a significant improvement in the reading comprehension of students in the tenth grade of SMA Pesantren Putri Yatama Mandiri.
