Concept of Reading

The Concept of Reading Comprehension ability

According to Caroline T.Linse, reading comprehension refers to reading for meaning, understanding for fun.13 Furthermore, according to Jane Oakhiil, reading comprehension as defined necessarily depends on at least adequate reading of words. Douglas Brown argues that reading comprehension is primarily a matter of developing appropriate and effective comprehension strategies. Then, according to Snow, reading comprehension is a process of simultaneously extracting and constructing meaning through interaction and involvement in the text. 16.

Next, according to Gary Woolley, reading comprehension is the process of making meaning out of text.17 This means that the purpose of reading comprehension was to gain an understanding of the text rather than to derive meaning from individual words or sentences. Based on explanation above, it can be concluded that reading comprehension is the activities that require the reader to carefully understand the total meaning of a reading selection. In reading comprehension, the learners are trained to obtain the information from the text so that the learners understand what they read.

There are some reading comprehension strategies that can be used to help readers understand a text. In order to know the achievement of reading comprehension ability, it is necessary to measure it with a reading assessment.

Definition of Synonym

According to Saeed, synonym can be defined as a kind of sensory relationship between words, in which such words have similar basic meanings.26 This means that synonyms are not only familiar words to learners, but can also help learners understand the reading text and have some information. According to Hancock, “a synonym is one of two or more words that have the same or similar meaning.27.

Definition of antonym

Definition of Context Clues Strategy

In addition, context clues are clues that the author intentionally or incidentally gives in the text to help students understand a difficult or unknown word.30 The most important thing is that students not only understand the meaning of words, but also understand the contextual use of words. words. Then, the meaning of an unknown word can often be guessed by analyzing the sentences around it. Authors often provide clues in the text that allow the reader to understand the meaning of an unknown word without having to look in a dictionary.

Next, according to Cooper, when readers use the known words around and an unknown word in a sentence, paragraph, or longer text to figure out either the pronunciation or the meaning of the unknown word, they are using context clues.31 So synonym and antonym context trace strategy can be defined as a learning strategy used by students as an attempt to achieve learning goals in reading comprehension. The student activates his background before reading a passage to make it easier for him to understand the content of the passage.
