The objective of this research was to find out the effectiveness of mind mapping to improve students writing ability at second year students of SMP Negeri 1 Suli Kab. Luwu.
This research employed pre-experimental design with one group pretest and post-test design. There were two variables; they are independent variable (effectiveness of mind mapping technique) and dependent variable (improving the students’ writing ability). The population of this research was the second year students of SMP Negeri Suli in academic year 2014/2015 which consisted of 144 students. The researcher was took class VIII.1 which consisted 24 students as the sample of the research. The sample was selected by using purposive sampling and the instrument of this research was writing test used in pre-test and post-test.
The research findings indicated that mind mapping technique was effective in improving students’ writing ability. It was proved by the mean score of students’ pretest in term of content was (49,6) is classified as poor score then improved in posttest to be (72.5) is classified as good with pecentage was (46,1%) and the mean score of students’ pretest in term of organization was (47.2) is classified as poor score then improved in posttest to be (70) is classified good with percentage was (48.3%). The value of t-test in the students’ writing ability in term of content was 8.267 >2.690, and the value of t-test in the students’ writing ability in term of organization was 8.194 >2.690 were bigger than the value of t-table, at the level significant 0.05 and the degree of fredom was (df=24-1). It means that, the result of data analysis shows that mind mapping technique was effective.
