Memorial Set for George Onoda
I regret to inform you of the death Jan. 1, 2014, of George Y. Onoda, 75, a resident of Almond, NY. He was technical director for the New York State Center for Advanced Ceramic Technology (CACT) at Alfred University from 1993 to 1996, and also taught ceramic engineering courses between 1993 and 2002. As technical director of the CACT, Dr. Onoda was instrumental in the formation of the Whiteware Research Center.
Dr. Onoda came to Alfred University after 10 years as manager of ceramic science for IBM's Thomas J.
Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY. He had previously been a professor in the
Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Florida; a research scientist at the IIT Research Center in Chicago, and a member of the technical staff for the Research Division of North American Aviation in Canoga Park, CA.
A Fellow of the American Ceramic Society, he served the Society in a number of leadership roles, including chair of the Division of Basic Science and chair of the Gordon Conference on Ceramics. He was invited to deliver the annual John F. McMahon Lecture at Alfred University in 1986, an honor afforded to those who are considered outstanding scientists and researchers in the field of ceramic materials.
Dr. Onodo was co-editor, with Dr. Larry Hench of the University of Florida, of "Ceramic Processing Before Firing," considered to be a seminal textbook in the field of materials processing, and "The Science of Whitewares," which he co-edited with Victoria Henkes '78 and Dr. William Carty, professor of ceramic engineering in the Kazuo Inamori School of Engineering at Alfred University.
He was a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, where he earned his B.S. and M.S.
degrees, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a Ph.D. in materials science.
Dr. Onoda is survived by his wife Carole and three grown children. A memorial service for Dr. Onoda will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 at Howell Hall.
