Alfred State College has outdoor warning sirens. In the event of life-threatening emergencies, Alfred State will activate the outdoor warning siren.
Any emergency that causes ASC to sound its alarm also has the potential to affect people on our campus. If and when you hear the siren, you should immediately return to a known safe, indoor location. Information about the emergency, including instructions about what to do, will be
communicated via E2Campus . If possible, other methods will be used including WALF broadcasts and postings on entrance doors to academic and residence hall buildings.
If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Public Safety at 607-871-2108.

Lecture in Conjunction with COLORSCAPES Exhibition Color: The Happy Accident that Begs to be Studied - Dr. William Carty Location: Binns-Merrill Hall, room 106/C
Date: Monday, Sept. 10, 2012 Time: 4:30 p.m.
Cost: Free/Open to public
After form, the color of the ceramic glaze is arguably the critical esthetic. Color can be elusive, however, particularly in ancient ceramics where the results were sometimes described (in translation?) as "Happy Accidents." Of the three principle (modern) routes to obtaining color in glazes, the color that is dependent on the complex interaction between chemistry and kiln atmosphere is the most intriguing.
Our work, which evolved out of a chance discussion on the firing temperatures of ancient Korean Celadons, have forced us to re-think the firing processes of ancient ceramics. In particular, ancient firing cycles were very long (potentially up to four days) and at lower temperatures than are currently used in ceramic production.
Also, the color of the glazes appears to be the direct result of the reaction between the body and the glaze, rather than an "intentional" chemistry addition to the base glaze. These observations provide insight into ancient processes and have several modern implications for studio work.
William Carty is the John F. McMahon Professor and Chair of Ceramic Engineering at the Kazuo Inamori School of Engineering, New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University.

NYS Launches Internship Website; Acception Applications for Fall '12
State launches new Website listing internship opportunities in all state agencies; over 400 internships available to students
New York State today launched a new one-stop website that allows students to view and apply for internship opportunities across an array of state agencies both downstate and upstate. The website is a product of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's New New York Leaders Initiative, which is focused on attracting new talent to state government through both a fellowship program and an internship
program. With the new internship website, applicants can view job descriptions, create profiles, specify interests, and upload resumes, writing samples and letters of recommendation.
"The internship program is designed to attract and mentor a new generation of talented leaders for New York State," said Governor Andrew M. Cuomo. "I'm encouraging the best and brightest young minds to apply, dedicate some time to public service and acquire valuable skills."
"Internships provide an opportunity to enhance academic course work with hands-on experience," said Civil Service Commissioner Jerry Boone. "Internship experience can provide an edge in an increasingly competitive job market."
The program is open to resident graduate and undergraduate students as well as students who attend schools in other states, but reside in New York. Opportunities include both paid and unpaid positions.
Internships may include academic credit depending on the policy of the educational institution.
To apply, visit nysinternships.com.

Toshiba Copier Contract Extended w/Savings
Alfred University has extended the current Toshiba MFP (photocopier) contract. The cost per copy has been reduced from $0.0254 to $0.022 beginning August 2012.
The extended contract has a minimum copy charge each month per machine. The minimum is based on 90% of each machine's usage over the past 18 months.
Every quarter Toshiba will review actual usage against the minimum established for each machine and will credit the department if the usage is less than the minimum. That is, while the monthly charges will be based on estimates, this will be adjusted quarterly to reflect actual usage. If a department exceeds the minimum established for their machine the cost per additional copy will be at an even lower rate of $0.015 per copy.
NOTE: An email will be forthcoming with the minimum requirements for each machine.
How this works:
Minimum Established: 1,000 copies per month At end of quarter: 3,000 copies at a cost of $66.00
* If the actual quarterly count is 2,500 copies, a credit will be posted o 500 copies at a rate of $0.022 or ($11.00)
* If the actual quarterly count is 3,500 copies there will be an invoice for the additional copies o 500 copies at the reduced rate of $0.015 or $7.50
By extending the contract, the University could save nearly $50,000 over the term of the agreement.
