Get Out and Register to Vote
Alfred University stands behind the idea that we all benefit when a greater share of Americans register and vote. This year there will be an important general election on Nov. 6, 2012. If you are not already registered to vote, please consider doing so now.
Alfred University students often have a choice of registering and voting right here in Allegany County (if you have been a resident in your present address for at least 30 days before the election) or voting by absentee ballot in your home county or state. The choice is yours, but please plan to register and vote on Nov. 6.
You can download the registration form and get more information about voting in New York State, including instructions on how to vote by absentee ballot, at this Web site maintained by the NYS Board of Elections: www.elections.ny.gov.
Please make sure that to register to vote, you must complete the form, print it out, sign it, and mail it to the county's Board of Elections. It must be postmarked by Oct. 12. If you do not want to print the form online. You can also pick up a paper copy of NYS Voter Registration forms at Special Academic Services, Herrick Library, Scholes Library, Powell Information Desk and the Office of Residence Life.
To request an absentee ballot for New York State, go to http://www.elections.ny.g... That form needs to be post marked by Oct. 30 to vote in this November's election.
For information about other states' registration deadlines and absentee ballot request deadlines you can visit www.canivote.org or www.turbovote.org.

Visiting Artist Mark Dion Lecture
An Illuminating Explication of Recent World Wide Experiments in Thinking in Three Dimensions Date: Wednesday, Oct. 17
Time:7:15-9 P.M.
Location: Holmes Auditorium Cost to Attend: Free/Open to Public
Sponsored By: The Dean of School of Art and Design, Visiting Artist Committee
Mark Dion was born in New Bedford, MA in 1961. He received a BFA (1986) and an honorary doctorate (2003) from the University of Hartford School of Art, Connecticut.
Dion's work examines the ways in which dominant ideologies and public institutions shape our understanding of history, knowledge, and the natural world. The job of the artist, he says, is to go against the grain of dominant culture, to challenge perception and convention.
Appropriating archaeological and other scientific methods of collecting, ordering, and exhibiting objects, Dion creates works that question the distinctions between 'objective' ('rational') scientific methods and 'subjective' ('irrational') influences. The artist's spectacular and often fantastical curiosity cabinets, modeled on Wunderkabinetts of the 16th Century, exalt atypical orderings of objects and specimens.
By locating the roots of environmental politics and public policy in the construction of knowledge about nature, Mark Dion questions the authoritative role of the scientific voice in contemporary society.
Dion has had major exhibitions at the Miami Art Museum (2006); Museum of Modern Art, New York (2004); Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, Connecticut (2003); and Tate Gallery, London.
