Exhibit at the Cohen Gallery: Residue

Residue: Caroline Hayes Charuk, Terry James Conrad, Ron Lambert, and SV Randall exhibit at the Cohen Gallery

Nov 3- Dec 8, Opening Reception 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., Friday, November 3

(8)

Cohen Gallery Cost: free

The Cohen Gallery presents the work of Caroline Hayes Charuk, Terry James Conrad, Ron Lambert, and SV Randall in "Residue," opening November 3, 6-9pm.

As humans we leave a trail behind us- a record of our personal histories. Some of these marks are egregious like the oil spills in the oceans, others are poetic like the subtly scuffed paint surrounding a well-used door knob. The artists in this exhibition are using residue as a tool for making their art. By making objects to create stains, mimic stains, or employ stains for creative reflection, these four artists reflect how residue can create a metaphor for life's experience.

HR Tip of the Week

Did you know that Open Enrollment is not necessarily the only time a year you can change your medical, dental, and vision benefits?

If you experience a qualifying life event, you need to contact Human Resources within 30 days of that life event (or 60 days for a change in eligibility for Medicaid or CHIP). You will be required to provide necessary documentation to either add/drop coverage.

Qualifying Life Events as defined below:

* Change in marital status (marriage, death of a spouse, divorce, legal separation).

* Change in number of dependents (birth, death, eligibility state, child support order).

* Change in employment status for you or your spouse (new employment, termination, leave of absence, full-time to part-time or vice versa).

* Special enrollment rights under HIPAA.

* Medicare coverage.

* Gain or loss of eligibility for Medicaid or Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

HR Tip of the Month

Did you know that there is a new New York State law that takes effect January 1, 2018 that will potentially affect you? This law is called, Paid Family Leave (PFL), and applies to all AU Non-Faculty employees. This leave provides paid leave for employees to bond with a newborn, adopted, or foster child, to attend family matters due to a qualifying military exigency, and to care for a seriously ill family member.

Employees who work 20+ hours a week have to be employed for at least 26 consecutive weeks.

Employees working less than 20 hours per week must have worked at least 175 days for their current employer.

This leave provides job protection for up to eight weeks when it is first implemented in 2018. This leave provides 50% of employee's weekly wages to them for a maximum of $652.96 per week in 2018.

PFL is funded through payroll deductions from employees, this program is not optional for any non- faculty employee at Alfred University. 0.00126% of the employee's weekly wage which is capped in 2018. This translates into a 2018 maximum contribution of $1.65/week for employee deductions for their paychecks.

Please see the attached document for further clarification and explanation.

Walk Like A Penguin

Cold weather, ice and snow can increase the chances of slips and falls, so the office of Environmental Health and Safety wants to remind all Saxons to stay safe this winter. We remind you to dress warmly and wear the appropriate attire, and, when appropriate, walk like a penguin. It may sound silly, but short, shuffled steps can decrease your chances of slipping. Be sure to download a copy of our Walk Like A Penguin poster to post in your area as we enter the winter season.

"Stars of Glory" - A Christmas Cantata

On Sunday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m., the Hornell Area Community Choir will be performing its annual Christmas Cantata at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, 27 Erie Ave., Hornell.

This year's cantata is "Stars of Glory" by Tom Fettke & Thomas Grassi. It is inspired by a Celtic Christmas Carol.

The choir is directed by AU's own Mark Smith, Associate Dean, Alfred University Libraries, Director for Scholes Library of Ceramics, and former Canisteo music teacher.

Members of the choir come from a variety of backgrounds, including the Maple City Barbershoppers, area church choirs, Alfred University and Alfred State faculty and staff, and members from more than 20 area churches. The choir will be accompanied by an instrumental ensemble.

Admission is free, but free-will offerings will be accepted. All funds raised this year will go to benefit the Elizabeth Rose Ministry.

The doors open at 6 p.m., when John Bartell, the organist for the church, will play Christmas tunes before the choir reaches the stage at 7 p.m.
