First of all, the researcher would like to say Alhamdulillah to Allah SWT for giving him health, strength and knowledge to complete this thesis entitled Analysis of First Language Interference in English Speaking of Sixth Semester Students of IAIN Bengkulu English Education Study Program. The researcher hopes that the thesis is useful for the researcher in particular and the readers in general.

INTRODUCTION

Identification of Problem

From the background of the above issue, the problem can be identified as follows: students in sixth semester classes A and B have difficulty in distinguishing similar sounds of English phonology, and students have difficulty in producing accepted English pronunciation. This research was focused on the phonological and lexical interference in speaking English of sixth semester students in Grade A and B English Education Study Program of IAIN Bengkulu.

Limitation of Problem

Research Question

Fromkin and Rodman define syntax as "the part of grammar that represents a speaker's knowledge of sentences and their structures Fromkin (2003, p. 117). This section looks further into the Subject of the research. The researcher has seven students per class A and B of the sixth semester taken to facilitate data collection on first language interference in speaking English of sixth semester students of English Education Study Program of IAIN Bengkulu, where the students have to use full English during presentation and discussion. In this sense "The baby -talk theory" there was a pronunciation error made by S.11.3.

In this sentence "The terms of variety language emerge as a result of different systems reflecting different varieties of the human condition" there was a pronunciation error made by S.12.1.

Objective of the Research

Significances of the Research

Carstair-McCarty says, “The area of grammar concerned with the structure of words and with relationships between words, involving the morphemes that compose them, is technically called morphology Carstair-McCarty (2002, p. 16). This language receives the source language elements, and then aligns the rules of pronunciation and writing with the target or recipient language. d) The elements of import; are the elements given in another language and then switch from a foreign language to the target language. Obungu Dominic Ochieng (2016), in his dissertation entitled 'Analysis of the Influence of Mother Tongue on English Performance in Kenya Certificate of Primary Education.'The most important findings of this research were presented that Dholuo has greater exposure than English in the community is initiated by parents, siblings, relatives and other adults.

Definition of Key Terms

Linguistics

Semantics is the study of fixed word and word combinations, and how they interact to form the meaning of the sentences. Meanwhile, according to Wardhaugh (1972), linguistics claims that linguistics is the study or study of language in a scientific manner.

Psycholinguistics

The characteristics of psycholinguistics as an interdisciplinary discipline are the study of psychology and linguistics so that it is not only purely scientific linguistics, but also about psychology that deals with the human soul. Psycholinguistics also investigates how language users receive and create it, how the human brain works with language, how children learn language theory, how children learn language, how they understand language and expression, and whether mother tongue intervention is a result of language learning.

Bilingualism

He added that there should not be a good degree of proficiency in using two languages; less skill is allowed. He says bilingual speakers may not actively use two languages; it is enough for him to understand the second language.

First Language

Interference

Interference is the effect of language contact and the phenomenon of using the substance of one language in another language, where the characteristics of the native language still appear in the target language. According to the structuralist view, grammar is the study of the rules for the use of a language. In the case of a learner, it is the .. c) language he/she learns when he/she uses it.

Students with limited language background in the target language tend to use words in sentences or orally in the structure and meaning of the first language.

The Nature of Speaking

The components of speaking skill

This is consistent with the explanation proposed by Heaton that learners' ability to manipulate structure and distinguish appropriate grammatical form from appropriateness is limited. The usefulness of grammar is also learning the correct way to acquire expert knowledge of the language in oral and written form. Without sufficient vocabulary, we cannot communicate effectively or express our ideas orally and in writing.

Thus, based on this explanation, the researcher concluded that without mastering enough vocabulary, English learners will not be able to speak English or write English properly. It deals with the phonological process which refers to the component of a grammar consisting of elements and principles that determine how sounds and patterns change in a language. From the above statement, the researcher concluded that pronunciation is the knowledge of studying how words in a particular language are clearly produced when people speak.

Signs of fluency include a reasonably fast rate of speech and only a small number of pauses and "ums" or "ers." These indicators show that the speaker does not spend much time looking for the linguistic elements required to express the message. Fluency means a person's ability to speak fluently and accurately with little use of pauses such as "ums".

Related Previous Studies

Arum cahaya Utami (2020), in her thesis "The First Language Intervention in Students' Writing of Recounting Text in State Secondary School 1 Jambi City", she found that there are four aspects of language intervention made by students in writing of the text. From the third previous research, what made the difference was that the object of the research in the previous study was the first language intervention in the students' writing recount text, while in the research the object was the first language intervention in speaking for the students of the semester the sixth of IAIN Bengkulu's English Education Study Program. The research discussion of the intervention is similar to that of the previous studies mentioned above and the writer's research.

Differentiating this research from previous findings above is the research subject and data collection system. The researcher analyzed the data through the audio recordings when he was the subject of the study. Students' error at morphological, lexical and syntactic level. An analysis of the influence of mother tongue on English performance in Kenya. Certificate of primary school education.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

  • Subject of the Research
  • Instrument of the Research
  • Procedure of Collecting Data
  • Technique of Data Verification
  • Technique of Analyzing Data

Ary et al., (1985, p. 342) stated, “In an interview, data are collected through face-to-face or telephone interaction between the interviewer and the respondent.” So the researcher needed different techniques to make the research data valid. In this study, the researcher used triangulation to ensure that the data was accurate or valid. These factors are due to the fact that most budaya and masyarakat menggunakan variasi bahasa yang berbeda.” In the above sentence, the respondent says that these factors can vary the most.

Lexical Interference, Weinreich (1968, p. 47) states that lexical interference can occur when one vocabulary item interferes with another.

RESEARCH RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Discussion

In this sentence “Repus must be filed in the respectable manner” there was a pronunciation error made by S.2.2. In this sentence “Put your trash in the trash” there was a pronunciation error made by S.3.1. In this sentence “look at the initial motives for its development, sociolinguistics” there was a pronunciation error made by S.3.3.

This indicated phonological interference because in speaking English, the student tends to speak "knowledge" for English "knowledge" as written form. In this sentence "interaction (informative, social) can be important" there was an error in pronunciation made by S.6.1. So, speaking English, the student tends to speak "important" for English "important" as the written form.

In this sentence "Supposed to come from a Chinese" there was a mispronunciation made by S.11.2. This indicates phonological interference because in speaking English, the student tends to speak "theory" for English "theory" as written form. This indicates phonological interference because in speaking English, the student tends to speak "apparently" for English "apparently" as the written form.
