INTRODUCTION

Research Background

The Students’ Difficulties In Translating Narrative Text At Grade X Of SMA Negeri 1 Sibabangun Tapanuli Tengah. The students in Senior High School level must deal with many kinds of the text.10.

Research Question

The reason why this research important to do in the school is the students can practice in doing assignment by translation of English narrative text into Indonesia, the students can practice in make a well sentence, the students can read and translate a new word from narrative text and also the students can practice in grammar that uses in narrative text. From the explanation above the researcher is focus to analysis the student‟s difficulties in translating narrative text made by students at MA MIFTAHUL ULUM KALISAT.

Research Objective

Significance of the Research

So that when the teacher have got the result on information related translating narrative text. The researcher hopefully with the result can be interesting for other researcher to conduct about translating.

Scope of the Research

The researcher hopes that the result of this research will be information for English teacher who was directly for teaching and in learning process. The teacher can make big change on the class that make the students increase in learning and translating narrative text.

Definition of Key Term

Teacher said that students in translating narrative text has difficult in vocabulary that uses in the text. How does the strategies employed by the students to overcome difficulties in translating narrative text.

Previous Research

Before this research there had been many researchers studied about students difficulties in translating narrative text. Previous research used student‟s difficulties in translating narrative text from Indonesia into English while this.

From the explanations above, the researcher knew that the students in translating narrative text by guessing vocabulary and blank. How does the strategies employed by the teacher to overcome difficulties in translating narrative text.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

According Creswell, the research designs are the specific procedure involved in the research process: data Collection, data analysis and report writing. It is used descriptive because this research aims to describe the obtain data of the field then this data research is collected the form of word. This research is qualitative because the human as an instrument to analyze the written data in translation‟s text.29.

Meanwhile according Sugiyono, method of the qualitative research is new because the popularity of also this researches it‟s not long time ago. Then this method is called the interpretive method because the results of the research results are more about the interpretive of the data found in the field.30. Based on the explanation above the researcher can conclude that this research use descriptive qualitative because the researcher would like to analyze the students difficulties in translating narrative text at tenth grade of MA Miftahul Ulum Kalisat.

Technique of Collecting Data

A semi-structured interview (in-depth interview) was an interview that was more freely than a structured interview. Because in semi structured has purpose to make the answer correctly than semi structured has purpose of this interview was to find the problems openly, which the interviewee was asked for their opinions and ideas.33 The researcher choose this type of interview (semi-structured) because it was very flexible to make this research clearly and it can help this research find the deeply of answer, despite the researcher have prepared the question the researcher able to add the other necessary question in the process of the interview. Qualitative observations are those in which the researcher takes field notes on the behavior and activities of individuals at the research site.

Researchers make observations on the spot on the object of research to be observed using the five senses. Observation can be participatory, when the researcher joins in and carries out activities with the object of observation. Is a researcher or observer who does not participate in the activities carried out by the group under study, in other words the researcher only places himself as a spectator.

So, the result from the accuracy of the data can be guaranteed.34 The researcher observed used observation participant, where is the researcher observed in the classroom about students in doing assignment, the condition in the classroom and the teacher‟s explanation in material.

The procedure of collecting Data

After the researcher asks permission to the leader, the researcher asks permission to English teacher then give know that the researcher will does research about narrative text material in tenth grade students. The researcher do interview with English teacher and ask about the students difficulties that related translating narrative text then how the teacher overcome the students difficulties in translating narrative text. The researcher record what English teacher say and note all about the condition during interview.

After the researcher do interview with English teacher, the researcher do interview with students to ask information about what difficulties of students in translating narrative text. Then, The researcher record what students say then note all about the condition during interview. After the researcher explained then the researcher gives a chance and time for students to do translating narrative text.

The researcher put all the picture during do interview with English teacher an also the students.

Technique of Data Analysis

Data condensation refers to the process of selecting, focusing, simplifying, abstracting, or transforming the data that appear in the full corpus (body) of written-up field notes, interview transcripts, documents, and other empirical materials. In this step, the researcher focused on summarizing and selected the notes fields to observation and interview. The researcher took the data about the student‟s difficulties in translating narrative text, the factor that affecting students in translating narrative text and the strategies of students to overcome the difficulties in translating narrative text.

Generically, a display is an organized, compressed assembly of information that allows conclusion drawing and action. The researcher presented the data from student‟s difficulties in translating narrative text, the factor that affecting student‟s difficulty in translating narrative text and the strategies of students to overcome the difficulties in translating narrative text. From the start of data collection, the qualitative analyst interprets what things mean by noting patterns, explanations, causal flows, and propositions.37 In the last of data analysis, the researcher give the result of problem statement then concluded after presenting the data and analyzing the data.

Validity of Data

So after obtaining observational data during the teaching and learning process of translation, especially regarding students translation in narrative text, the researcher compare it with the results of interview from various source(between teacher and students) and compared the results of interview with the contents of related document reviews.

Procedure of Research

  • The Structure of Thesis

In the field, the researcher found that the difficulties from linguistic factor that made the students‟ felt difficulty in translating narrative text. There are open dictionary and also asking teacher and friend to overcome the difficulties in translating narrative text. Based on the explanation above, the researcher was found that students in translating narrative text had problem with tenses in the text.

The Students must assemble a sentence from the results of translating narrative text from English into Indonesian. This statement is also supported by the answers of students who feel bored in translating narrative text. The student‟s difficulties in translating narrative text were divided into five difficulties in linguistic factor.

The teacher should give more attention to make practice in translating narrative text in the class. It was expected be able to search about the strategies of difficulties in translating narrative text. Student’s difficulties in translating narrative text from English into Indonesia at viii of smp negeri 9 pematangsiantar.

RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS

But the students in the class when doing the translation narrative text had difficulties miss. Students were found to be lazy in translating narrative text due to lack of motivation.

Conclusion

The objectives of this research were to find out the students difficulties in translating narrative text, the factor affecting students difficulties in translating narrative text and the strategies to overcome it. The first is students difficult in grammatical structure in narrative text that focused on the use of Simple Past tense, the second is students difficult in word comprehension (vocabulary), the third is students difficult to understand meaning of word that not find in dictionary, the fourth is the students difficult to arrange the text in target language and the last is students difficult to translate the long and complex sentence. This research finds that the students engaged strategies to overcome the difficulties in translating narrative text including: checking the word entry in dictionary, asking friends and teacher.

This research will be references to know the weakness of students in translating any English text especially Narrative text. The teacher should search some strategies or methods in teaching translation that can make students interest in translating text then it will overcome the difficulties of the students faced in translating narrative text. The students’ difficulties in translating narrative text at grade x of SMA Negeri 1 Sibabangun tapanuli tengah.2019.Thesis: IAIN Padangsidimpuan.

What are the difficulties faced by seven grade students of MA miftahul Ulum kalisat in translating narrative text. Narrative text is a story with complication or problematic events and it tries to find the resolutions to solve the problems.
