ANNUAL REPORT OF PRESIDENT CARL M. WEIDEMAN:· The Turners today, and in the future, have a big job to do for America. Wit~ horizons unlimited, our aim should be the development of a model Turner Society in every organized community in the Nation.

And the program for tomorrow should be as unique as the organization itself is today. Today we have a society in which all members of the family, including the children, participate in an equal degree: tomorrow we should, we shall provide the physical facilities for the expansion of this society's existence into a richer, fuller enjoyment of life.

In order to accomplish this, the Turn Hall of tomorrow must include not only a gymnasium-which is the keystone of our founda- tion-but must also house a swimming pool, handball courts, a steam room and exercise room. It should contain bowling alleys, a tap and card room for social life as well as a stage to be used for society functions.

In addition to an adequate gymnasium, the Turner Society of tomorrow will have need for a small auditorium with individual rooms fitted for such activities as the glee club, Red Cross groups, dramatic groups and the like. A dining hall of generous proportions is also envisioned in our building program. These plans for the future, while they might seem idealistic at this time, need only concentrated and continued effort on the part of each Turner in order to become a reality.

Those of you familiar with Turnerism are aware of its growth in the past one hundred years: you have seen outlined above our plans for the coming years. However, our program for today and tomorrow has changed little since our program of yesterday. Our basic purpose through- out the years has been:

First-a planned program of physical and health education for the development of a sound body.

Second-a course of cultural education for the development

of a sound mind. ·

Third-a planned social program for men, women and chil- dren to insure us a happy and peaceful life.

Fourth-participation in all worthy civic projects, local and national, in an attempt ·to repay America for the security and opportunity she has provided in the past and promised for the future.

!herefore, for the perpetuation and promulgation of Turnerism in Amenca, we should like to see established the American Turners Endow- ment Trust. Our goal would be the securing a fund of a half million

~ollars contributed voluntarily from our hundred societies. Our objec- tive would be the assistance to some of the societies with their building programs. Monies from the Endowment Trust Fund will not be given away, but will be loaned to local societies. The repayment of these loans will establish a revolving fund which will be constantly available for the expansion of our program.

Such a program requires organization and administration of the highest order. It also requires the support of every individual in the

- 4 -

American Turner organization. An average contribution of twenty dollars from each member would establish the Endowment Trust as a concrete force for action this year. Actually. we s~~uld not, we cannot, postpone this decision. You've heard this defi.mtion of the Turners before:

"The American Turners is a federation of Turn.er Societie~ in the United States of America, organized. to promote physical educatio~ and disseminate rational ideas, in order to advance the health, happiness, prosperity, and progress of mankind.

It is the principal duty of our societies to provide cour~es ~n physical training for youth and adults and also. to promote. their ~ntellectual growth and moral character through special schools, instructive lectures and stimulative debates.

Believing in the United States as a democr~cy ·in a. republic ;sta?- lished upon the principles. of .freedom and e9.uahty, dec:J.icated to Justice and. humanity, we recognize in the harmonious education of body and mind the most important factor to preserve and perfect sue~ a democracy.

Therefore we seek to train the citizen for the etfi~ient disc~arge. of all his duties toward the community, also s~owing ~im ho~ to hve his ow~

life in a wholes.ome_and rati~nal way, with happiness as its proper goal.

The t~ue ·Turner, who acquires the real meaning of Turnerism, develops a . philosophy of. life and a pattern of living. The Turner principies are as sound'·today as they were a hundred years ago; and they will be as sound a 'hundred, even a thousand, years from today. We have a glorious past of which we are justifiably proud. Let us start today to build an even more glorious future.

The tremendous success of our One Hundreth Anniversary Festival at St. Louis proves that the need for 'furn vereins is greater than ever.

The sympathetic response that we received not only from our membe~s but also from high governmental officials, the public and the press is ample indication that America i~ inter·ested in the things that the Turners teach and in our method of doing the same. ·

The interest of Turners in cities such as Chicago, Fort Way:ie, St. Louis, Beaver Falls and Baltimore indicates that .those cities are npe for the building of a new Turner I-:Iall. These are times w~e:i Turner$

must be broadminded ·and progressive, courageous and amb1t1ous; and, if we are, the next two years will see a Turner growth as nev~r before witnessed. Fort Wayne is working c;m plans ~or. a new. ~all as is Beaver Falls. Now is the time for the Chicago Societies t? JOin together a~d build a new and modern Turnverein and the same is,, true of. St. ~01;11S, Baltimore, St. Paul and Minneapolis. Wilmington, Del. is building a large addition to its premises.

Your National Committee cannot do the necessary work for you to create a Hall in your city. The best we can do is help and encourage you. We have sent out to 6,000 Turners floo~ plans for a model Turner building. We would appreciate any suggestions you may have for a change in the design or improvements of the same. When your sug- gestions are received, we will try to go to work and encourage and help

- 5 -

(5)

some city to build the first modern Turn Hall in the United States.

If you haven't donated to the American Turners Endowment Trust, do so today. We would appreciate a pledge, payable within the next two years, of at least $25.00 from each Turner. Surely there must be some Turner among you that can afford to give $10,000; some who can afford $1,000. Many of our Turners have died within the past few years leaving considerable wealth behind but never one penny to the Turner movement. All of you are going to die someday. Why don't some of you donate to the cause which has given much health, happiness to yourself, your family and also has helped make America a better place to live in.

We know of no better cause to donate to than to the American Turners Endowment Trust. You will perpetuate your name in Turner history as one who is willing to help our cause and your donation should also give you a certain mental satisfaction that you are going to help many people in the years to come to enjoy a fuller, freer and happier life.

I want to thank each Turner in America for the tremendous help he has given to the National Executive Committee in the last year in helping to establish our program.

With Turner Greetings,

AMERICAN TURNERS ENDOWMENT TRUST

In accordance with a recommendation of the Forty-first Convention of the American Turners, held at Indianapolis, Indiana, August 3 0 - September I, 1946, the National Executive Committee ret~ined legal counsel for the purpose of drawing up a plan to receive monies or sub- scriptions to a "National Turner Society Building Fun~.'' After much planning and discussion concerning the most appropriate method of accomplishing this, there evolved the "American Turners Endowment Trust," an agreement executed by Carl M. Weideman, .Will~a~ M.

Ludwig, Emil L. Pletz and Karl Schaltenbrand, of Detroit, Michigan, Harry Erickson of Moline Illinois, Alv~n Steinke, of Cleveland, Ohio and Frederick H. Meyer of New York City, N. Y.

Because of the fundamental and far-reaching importance of this matter, the above-mentioned Declaration of Trust was submitted to a referendum vote of the American Turners and was adopted by a large majority. Printed copies have since been widely distributed, together with a "Model Building Program for the American Turners.''

Two meetings have been held to date by the Trustees; one an organizational meeting held in Cleveland, Ohio, on Ju~y 19,. I ~4 7; the other a regularly constituted meeting held at Detroit, Michigan on January 3, 1948.

One change has occurred in the Trustees.-Emil L. ?letz s.ub- mitted his resignation at the January, 1948 meeting, due to his app~:n~t

ment as full-time National Secretary. Subsequently the remammg Trustees unanimously elected Marshall Troester of Detroit, Michigan to fill the vacancy.

Officers of the Trustees are as follows: Carl M. Weideman, Presi- dent, Frederick H. Meyer, Vice-President, Karl Schaltenbrand, Secretary and Marshall Troester, Treasurer.

Response to the American Turners Endowment Trust ha~ been overwhelming, and many thousands .of dol~ars have be~n c~mtnbute.d

already, well in advance of any organized dnve for .contributions. It 1s gratifying testimonial to the faith of our members m the future of the American Turners.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL PHYSICAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE

March 27, 1948 Greetings:

A report of most of our Yearly Championships of the 1946-1947 season was included in the last annual report. The other meets were:

BADMINTON-One entry from Toledo, the balance of entries were from the Western New York District. This was a very successful and well-run meet, even though entries were too localized for a National Meet.

TRACK ~ND FIELD-Scheduled for Concordia Turners of St.

Louis, but not held due to lack of entries.

On the basis of entries and interest shown in the 6 Championships conducted duri~g the '46-' 4? season'. it appears that some changes are necessary. Itemized expenses incurred m the conduct of these Champion- ships are listed in the report of the SPECIAL PHYSICAL ACTIVI- TIES FUND.

The main efforts of the Committee for the past year have been toward the successful conduct of the 3 7th National Tournament com- memorating our 1 OOth Anniversary. To this end two meetings of the full Committee were held for the purpose of revising the Rules booklet and bringing it up to date, and in arranging and editing the Tourna- ment drills, exercises, and pictures. In addition, we have had several

- 1 6 -

necessary meetings with the St. Louis Committee.

During the year there was rising sentiment favoring the lowering of the minimum age for competitors at National Tournaments, even though the response to two separate questionnaires did not so indicate.

Your National Physical Education Committee, in revising the Rules, did lower the men's age limit 6 months to correspond to that of the women' but is not in accord with

a

lower age limit.

A meeting of instructors, in the past held at the Normal College during Homecoming. was held in January ·in Detroit _with 29 Societies sending their instructors. Regional Representatives and Endowment Fund Trustees also attended the meetings. At this time all Tournament rules, regulations, drills, and exercises for the St. Louis Tournament were given out, thorough~y discussed, and pictures of the exercises and drills were shown. We believe that this will make for a much more uniform interpretation than in the past. This meeting proved to be much more successful than past meetings.

Your attention is called to Page 49 of the latest Rules Booklet regarding the method in which Alterations and Amendments relative to National Tournament Rules are to be made. I mention this in the interest of all, so that proper thought and observation can be made during the St. Louis Tournament, and changes and additions brought before our next National Convention.

With Turner Greetings,

Geo. M. Heeschen.

REPORT OF THE SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE

The American Turners have established scholarships for men and women members in the Normal College of the American Gymnastic Union of Indiana University in Indianapolis. Male members can get a scholarship paying $150.00 per year for two years while that for female members pays $50.00 per year for two years.

Men who receive this scholarship obligate themselves to teach in a society of the American Turners for at least two years after gradua- tion. They must have been members for at least three years, must be middle grade Turners and must rank within the upper half of their high school class ..

Women in order to receive the scholarship must have attended classes of a Turner society for at least three years and their father must have been a member for three years.

For the school-year 1947-48, the American Turners awarded a full scholarship to Walter Black of Syracuse Tunrers and partial scholarships to Marianne Noldan of Syracuse Turners and Marcia Kohn of Monongahela Turners. A full scholarship was also awarded to Anthony Mesagno of Turnverein Vorwaerts, Brooklyn, but he left the College at the end of the first semester. Edwin Reisig of Buffalo Turners received a full scholarship for the second semester.
