THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

Previous Research

The concept first described the main character and then combined Sigmund Freud's theory of personality structure into the story. The second and the third describe the characterization of both main objects using the Sigmund Freud theory. Rabbiatul and Sulaiman give a broad description of characterization, which is of great importance to the writer's thesis.

The reason why the writer chose Freud's theory is to prove that it is the most suitable one that can explain the mental development of any human character. The story in Catch Me If You Can starring Leonardo Dicaprio as Frank Abagnale is a unique personality problem, so the theory the writer uses to observe the story is Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalysis of Personality Structure. However, applying Sigmund Freud's theory of personality structure requires an analysis of the inner story element.

The writer takes Freud's theory of psychoanalysis as a reference to analyze the character of Frank Abagnale.

However, that changed when his father became involved in a tax evasion case that bankrupted the business and his parents no longer faced each other. So his father had an idea and brought Frank to the clothing store to buy suits. Arriving at the bank, the Bank's loan officer did not give his father a loan because his father did not have a job and the officer knew that Frank's father was bankrupt.

Frank thought that a respected profession and a lot of money would make him respected by people, just like his father before bankruptcy. Frank also forced his father to invite his mother to go on vacation with a new car. After his father died and his mother married another man, Frank began to think logically.

Frank began to feel a big difference in his life since his father went bankrupt. His father felt that his son did not deserve to celebrate a birthday, just make pancakes and nothing special. Earlier, Frank already knew that the mother was having an affair, but Frank deliberately did not tell his father to avoid big problems.

In this scene, Dick Kesner told Frank to choose who he lived with, his father or his mother. Frank was very interested in the profession of a uniformed and authoritative pilot. considers a high profession and has a lot of money will make himself respected as his father figure before bankruptcy. Frank wants his father and mother not to be divorced and to go back to being happy like at the beginning of the story.

However, as he realizes that his father had died and his mother married another person, he becomes upset and disappointed because he has no soul at all. To end Frank's criminal activities is a way to protect himself from the traumatic situation when he loses his father figure.

In the picture above, the main character understands what happened to his family, that they are no longer rich, which forces Frank to his Superego. Unknowingly, Frank brings the authority figure of his father to people who are honorable and good at lying to trick people at school. Thus, Frank's superego was no longer looked at from the side of the heart because he was overcome with anger and wanted to take revenge by pretending to be the French language because there was no real teacher at the time.

From the dialogue above, Frank tried to explain his reason why he wanted to be a substitute teacher to brad's answer and shame, the students who bothered him, with his power to become a teacher. Furthermore, the dialogue above shows Dick Kesner, a lawyer, wanting to say to him sincerely, "Now I want you to leave your things here and follow me into the next room okay?" that his parents were going to divorce. The dialogue above shows that Frank didn't have a choice and cheat of reckless behavior, as Frank ran away from home because he needed money to survive and tried to think of a way to save his broken family.

But it's meant to do something that could save his family from being broken and rich again: "I'm going to get it all back now". he is going to have a lot of money and start his family.

From this condition, it seemed that Ego's efforts could fulfill his Id's wishes to make a lot of money and save his family.
