Past Simple: Verb 2
We use the past simple to talk about things which started and finished in the past. E.g.:
1. The judge started his job in 1998.
2. She worked in the court every day for ten years.
3. I went to a bookstore and I bought some novels and scientific books.
4. I didn’t understand the problem.
5. Did you delete all the files?
(+) S + V2
(-) S + didn’t + V1 (?) Did + S + V1 ?
Negative and interrogative sentences
1.
I went to a bookstore.
1. (-) I didn’t go to a bookstore.
2. (?) Did you go to a bookstore?
2.
She bought some novels.
1. (-) She didn’t buy some novels.
2. (?) Did she buy some novels?
3.
They brought the computers.
1. (?) Did they bring the computers?
4.
James hid the knife in the cupboard.
1. (-) James didn’t hide the knife in the cupboard.
Time expressions
With the Past Simple we use time expressions like:
yesterday, yesterday morning/afternoon/evening,
last night/week/year/Saturday
when I was five/ten
Ten years ago
In September/ 2004 E.g.:
Where did you go yesterday?
What did you steal last night?
She spoke to the police a week ago.
Past Simple of “be” (‘was’ and ‘were’)
