NEW NAMES FOR TWO SUBSPECIES OF PEROMYSCUS MA NICULA TUS
(W AG N ER
).BY EDGAR
A.MEARNS.
Mr. Gerrit S. Miller, Jr., has
drawn my
attention to the factthat the
names
applied byme
totwo
forms of the genus Peromyscus, defined in 1890, were preoccupied, and
are there- fore not available.The
name
HesperomysleucopusarcticusMearns(1890)*must beconsid- eredaspreoccupiedby"[Hesperomys]arcticus,Sauss."ofCoues1877,tin accordancewith "opinion4," rendered bythe internationalcommission onzoologicalnomenclature,* whichaffirmsthat"manuscriptnamesacquire standinginnomenclaturewhenprinted inconnection with the provisions ofArt. 'S>,§ andthe question as to their validity isnot influenced bythe factwhether such namesare accepted or rejected bytheauthor respon- sible for theirpublication." Inthiscaseit isevident that theauthordid not intend to setuparcticus as the
name
ofa validform, as, indeed, he expresslystated thatheconsideredit toshow not theslightestdeparture from the ordinary form of leucopus. Thename
arcticus can not be regarded asanoma/ nudum, as Coues gave acomplete history, with noless than eight measurements of specimen No. :iu24. Moreover, as the animal from Labrador to which Coues attached the
name
arcticus, in 1877, is a synonym of Hesperomys maniculaius Wagner, 1845, thename
arcticusdisappearsfrom nomenclature|| and cannotbeusedforthedif- ferent form from Fort Simpson, Mackenzie, Canada, which Idescribed, in 1890, under the
name
Hesperomys leucopus arcticus; for the latter Inow
