FAITH IN GOVERNMENT
I am very grateful for the support we have received from the members of this Board. It is suggested that a copy of the Kiwanis Magazine be sent by that class to the president of each Latin American Club. It should be noted that the growth during this administrative year has come in the face of the energy crisis.
We are increasingly aware of the finances required to maintain an effective Field Service staff. FINANCES The financial health of the organization continues to be very good, with the exception of the international extension program.

Kiwanis Magazine, Production costs and postage costs have increased even more since our February reference, so that we are not only sure that the subscription price will have to be increased next year, but also that it will be necessary to make noticeable economies in the production of the ten issues. to turn of THE KIWANIS MAGAZINE during the intervening administrative year. Earlier today, this Board held a full and formal hearing of the presentation of the Great Neck, New York Kiwanis Club accepting women as members and refusing to reverse this action, despite the Board's mandate that they do so. do. Updating that information, you are all aware that the Jaycees, whose national organization was similarly sued by the Rochester, New York Jaycees Club, won their first court case.
It is interesting to note that the lawsuit alleged that the national Jaycees organization was subject to anti-discrimination guidelines because it received and enjoyed government funds for charitable activities. We will keep in touch with the various members of the Service Club Leaders Conference and will be sure to keep you informed.

REPORT OF THE COUNCIL COMMITTEE ON ADMINISTRATION AND STRUCTURE TO THE MEETING OF THE INTERNATIONAL BOARD OF TRUSTEES. The representatives of Eastern Canada and the Caribbean District came to the meeting of 30 March 1974 in accordance with the action taken by the Council of Eastern Canada and the Caribbean on 10 February 1974. The Council of Eastern Canada and the Caribbean Islands has every right to receive and respond to the results of the meeting of March 30, 1974.
Therefore, the Board of Directors of Kiwanis International should assume that the representatives of the Eastern Canada and Caribbean District at the meeting of March 30, 1974 acted in good faith. It is also the board's considered opinion that the agreement must consider this.

At this time I would like to introduce you to a member of the Great Neck Club, Don Siegel. Around the table, Don, are the officers and members of the Board along with our Counsel Mr. EAGLES: Don, we have called the hearing and we greatly appreciate your attendance here to present the sentiments of the Kiwanis Club of Great Neck.
This was presented to this board by the New York District Board of Kiwanis International. In some of the correspondence in the little pamphlet I handed out, there is a note about the meeting – I'm not going to refer to that specifically. So without a formal vote taking place, I really don't know the true feelings of the delegates and the entire Kiwanis membership.
Because you challenged the voting method in the first place~ and as one lawyer to another, I'm sure you'll agree with that. As one lawyer again to another, I will ask you how under our Constitution and Bylaws this Board, under its present authority, can oppose the action of the House of Delegates. Siegel that the tax exemption to which he refers is Paragraph 501~ CE and c-4 of the Internal Revenue Code.
The plaintiffs alleged that they were violating the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments to the Constitution and the Civil Rights Act by preventing women from becoming members of the United States. It was the plaintiffs' position that the Jaycees i2 the United States was a practical arm. The court found that the Jaycees of the United States administer substantial grants on behalf of the government and.
SIEGEL: In the district court there is now an order pending on behalf of the New York. If they are no longer members of the Kiwanis Club of Great Neck, New York, then that is a moot question. SMI'I'H: Is it the contention of the Great Neck Kiwanis Club that that document the Con-.
BR!LL: In doing so, you avoided the provisions of the constitution and statute. You tried to do something that you have no right to do according to the provisions of the constitution and statute. KEYES: Were you an officer or board member of your club when the first woman was admitted to Great Neck?
I thank you for your time and consideration, and I appreciate you being given this opportunity.

Eagles: Let's come to order, in preparation for the session that has been scheduled on behalf of the club of the Great Neck. 34; IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED, that those women who have entered as members of the Great Neck. New York District of Kiwanis International and Kiwanis International". of our bylaws states that a club is authorized to adopt the club's standard bylaws as modified only as approved by the Board of Trustees, which I interpret to mean the understanding that the interpretation of the bylaws of the club similarly resides in the Board of Administration.
Number One -- That this Board interpret Section 3 of Article VIII of the Constitution with respect to female membership by concurring and following. In light of this interpretation and in light of the fact that our board meetings are not public, but rather are private, they should be limited both in observation and attendance to members in good standing of Kiwanis clubs in Kiwanis International. Now for discussion ~ and perhaps our advisor would like to speak at this point. would not exclude me as a lawyer from attending this meeting because I am not a member of the board.
Don't you really understand what you're driving at if you say 0 at the invitation of the board". I think if we do something that dilutes the effect of the vote in the House of. If the club is to have its charter revoked. , that is due to the action taken by one or more members of the club individually or by call.
I agree with that, but you said our loyalty is to the club and not to the individual members of the club. It is something to consider. something to say on both sides of the issue. The International Board in this whole case is based on the actions of delegates taken at the International Convention in Montreal, rejecting women as members of the organization.
