The last contextual consideration in the assimilation process is the leadership style of the pastor. Early in the new member class it was introduced as part of following Christ as a member of the church.

Former Enemies Become Fellow Builders

The Gibeonites themselves described Saul as "the man who devoured us and planned to destroy us, so that we would have no place in all the territory of Israel" (2 Sam 21:5). At the time Nehemiah led the group to Jerusalem, this task belonged to "the priests, the Levites, and the people" (Neh 10:34).

Those Who Remain in Christ Remain in Fellowship Christ Remain in Fellowship

It was not new for His disciples to hear the Lord speak of the concept of truth. 18 Gottfried Quell, Gerhard Kittel, and Rudolf Bultmann, "Ἀλήθεια, Ἀληθής, Ἀληθινός, Ἀληθεύω," in Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, ed. In the early period of the Roman Empire, the rights of a slave were practically non-existent.

The number one growth problem of the 21st century Church revolves around the inability of the Church. New member classes have been shown to increase assimilation, thus closing the "back door" of the church. Reviewing the goals, I was reminded of the overall goal: to establish a new member assimilation process.

In the third session, "God's Precepts for Your Life," I addressed the next important topic that congregation members need to understand—the nature and reliability of the Bible. The process of writing and editing the curriculum for a new member class was the most challenging part of the project. Lawing chose the church's large Family Life Center for the venue because of its spaciousness.

With the support of the pastor and ABC members, preparation was complete and the new member class could begin.

The Challenge of Connecting

Next, each goal must be explored and evaluated in light of the purpose of this project. I quickly discovered that the poor survey response would not interfere with this part of the survey. In the past I have emphasized the importance of depending on the guidance and wisdom of the Holy Spirit, and that is what Lawing did.

Instead, the pastor chose to pursue what he found most effective—personal relationships. While one person could not be expected to meet every newcomer in a larger church, the method preferred at ABC is feasible largely due to the size of the church and the efforts of the pastor. Therefore, even though it was not possible to discover and test various methods to overcome the challenge of connection, it seems that Lawing's personal approach in the context of ABC would be the most effective at this time.

The first objective was intended to test various methods and use the most effective method. Due to the low response of area pastors and Lawing's confidence that his method was the most effective, I was unable to achieve this goal.

The Creation of Curriculum

Some may say that all churches want to assimilate newcomers into their fellowship who share the church's beliefs, unite around the church's mission, and join hands in true "gospel partnership" (Philippians 1:5) . Preparing the curriculum for the class of new members was the second goal of the project and required much more effort than I had anticipated. The class started on a Sunday morning in the 25th week of the project, while the ABC Sunday School was meeting normally.

After learning the importance of a regenerated membership united around the message and mission of the church, the deacons and members of the ABC yoke voted to require all those seeking membership in the future to complete a new member class and commit to attending Sunday School. According to the ABC bylaws, deacons and yoke members have the sole authority to determine who is an active or inactive member.4 Fortunately, Lawing did not need to be convinced of the importance of church membership that shares the same vision and church ministries that align around the purpose of the church. Of the 10 surveys returned after the lecture, I eliminated one because there was no corresponding pre-lecture survey to compare it to.

The small number of surveys returned after class accounted for only 21 percent of all surveys completed before class began. I was disappointed by the small number of surveys per class, which made it impossible to thoroughly evaluate the class.

Contributing to the Knowledge of the Class

There were too few students who participated in the after-class survey to be considered a fair sample of all pre-class surveys. The classroom survey revealed a 4 percent increase in those who strongly agreed with the statement that "all followers of Christ should bring His glory by helping others to follow Him." Another statement on personal evangelism had a mixed response. In a pre-class survey, 80 percent strongly believed, “It is important for followers of Christ to faithfully attend and support their local church.” The remaining 20 percent agreed, but not very much.

When pre-class respondents came up with the statement, “The Bible is God's word and is true, reliable, accurate, and powerful,” 93 percent strongly agreed. Of those surveyed at the end of the lesson, 67 percent strongly agreed and 33 percent agreed. At ABC, 70 percent strongly agreed with the statement, “The pastor is the pastor-leader of the local church,” while 28 percent somewhat agreed and one disagreed slightly.

As for familiarity with the Cooperative Program, 80 percent and only 20 percent disagree with the statement. As such, the comparison between pre-class and post-class survey results is intended to accurately show the improvement in response accuracy.

Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure tribulations, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill all the duties of your ministry.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples

So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said: “It would not be right for us to neglect the service of the word of God to wait at tables. Brethren, choose from among yourselves seven men who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will pass this responsibility on to them and give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word."

We must be careful not to be overwhelmed by the Church's many descriptions and duties. Would it not be wiser to place all these services as an expression of the Church's purpose. When we simplify the church's purpose and begin with the highest priorities Christ gave the church, any other Scripture-based ministry that God's Spirit leads us to pursue will (super)naturally result.
