Blended learning is a face-to-face learning (traditional) method combined with online learning, it is often defined as the combination of face-to-face and online learning (Garrison, 2011). Based on the reason above, the author would like to conduct a research titled "The Effect of Blended Learning Method towards Students' Reading comprehension at SMP N 1 Sipahutar". The purpose of the study is to find out whether the blended learning significantly affects the students' reading comprehension in the second grade of SMP N 1 Sipahutar.

Most of the community around the world use English to communicate with others who have different languages. We define method as "the assembly or system of processes or ways of executing operations involved in the learning process, integrated into a single course of action, to achieve the proposed objectives" (Cerghit 2006:140). the degree of freedom and direction depends on the pedagogical conception at the core of the pedagogical approach.

Skills in English

Reading involves both the acquisition of meanings intended by the researcher and the reader's own contributions in the form of interpretation, evaluation and reflection on those meanings. For example, two-way communication compensates for the lack of communication skills in traditional learning. This too is more complicated than it seems at first glance, and often seems to be the most difficult of the skills even for native speakers of a language, as this is not the case.

Reading

The Purpose of Reading

You can read for pleasure, as in reading a storybook, or for knowledge, as in reading a history book. Based on the above explanation, the writer summarizes that the purpose of reading is to connect or correlate the ideas about the text with what you already know, and to gain more information or greater understanding and knowledge.

The Process of Reading

The difficulty at this stage depends on the difference between the writing of the learner's native language and English and between the spelling conventions of the two languages. The student sees the syntactic relationships of the units and understands the structural meaning of the syntactic units. So, it means that the learner focuses on understanding the structural meaning of the syntactic units.

The student understands the meaning of a word, a phrase or a sentence in the general context of the throws. For example, he understands the serious and joking use of words, distinguishes between a statement of fact and a statement of opinion.

Types of Reading

Intensive reading will provide a basis for explaining structure difficulties and expanding knowledge of vocabulary and idioms. It will also provide material for developing greater command of language in speaking and writing. It will not only be read, but discussed in detail in the target language, sometimes analyzed and used as a basis for writing exercises.

Intensive reading emphasizes the speech habit and allows accents, stresses, intonation and rhythm to be corrected. Extensive reading is the most effective way to help students change old habits and become confident second language readers. Material for extensive reading is chosen at a lower difficulty level than for intensive reading.

The purpose of extensive reading will be to train the student to read directly and fluently in the target language for. Extensive reading can be the basis for oral reports, for the rest of the class, or for a whole class discussion. In extensive reading, students have the main role, as they have to ask about actions.

The teacher should know that the training of reading aloud should be carried out at the primary level, since this is the basis of the pronunciation of words.

Reading Comprehension

The Levels of Reading Comprehension

The level of inferential understanding, also called the interpretive level, is the level of understanding what is implied but not explicitly stated.

Blended Learning

WhatsApp Messenger

WhatsApp messenger is a cross-platform instant messaging application that allows iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone and Nokia smartphone users to exchange text, image, video and audio messages for free. And whatsApp is a worldwide popular instant messaging application for smartphone and as we know the users need to use their internet connection to send messages to each other. WhatsApp as a relatively new tool in education, that is what encourages teacher and students to use it to improve.

PDF stands for "Portable Document Format", and PDF is a file format designed for consistent presentation of documents across multiple devices and platforms. While the term document originally referred specifically to word processor documents, it is now used for all types of saved files, doc in this research contains text. Voice messaging is Voice messaging is a direct communication technology in which messages are transmitted through the medium of voice.

Based on the explanation above, the author summarizes that blended learning is thus a flexible approach to course design that supports the mixing of different times and places of learning, offering some of the conveniences of fully online courses without the complete loss of face-to-face. Contact. It shows that blended learning is a flexible approach that can be done not only in the classroom, but also outside the classroom. It provides wider opportunity for students to explore the information related to the topic they are learning.

In this research, the writer uses the theory of Leibling and Prior (2005:3) and Watson about the blended learning method. This theory can help the writer discover that blended learning significantly affects students' reading skills.

The Advantages of Blended Learning Method

The blended learning model emphasizes bringing together online and face-to-face classroom components. In fact, research shows that blended learning increases students' chances of meeting course outcomes compared to fully online and even fully face-to-face courses, reducing dropout rates, increasing test scores, and increasing student motivation. to the students. Interactive content enables the teacher to create a high level of interest, accountability and real assessment.

It allows the instructor to tailor the learning content to the unique needs of different audience segments. The model offers students the best of both worlds, as instructors and students have greater flexibility and accessibility without sacrificing personal contact. A blended learning approach is an effective, low-risk strategy designed to meet the challenge of transformational change that technological developments are bringing to higher education.

And other benefits of the blended learning method in teaching reading is that you don't need to be physically present in the classroom to benefit from the instruction. You can see a list of other students in the class and hear the instructor speak. In addition, the instructor can provide you with a virtual microphone so that the whole group can hear you.

Information can be presented and computers and computer applications can be shared over the Internet (Woodall.

The Disadvantages of Blended Learning Method

Previous Research

The difference of this research from previous research is that the author uses the blended learning method and used the Leibling and Prior and Watson theory. The problem of this research "Does the blended learning method significantly affect the students' reading comprehension at the second grade of SMP N 1 Sipahutar?". Blended learning helped many of the students to be more metacognitively aware of their English writing process.

The differences between this research and previous research are that the writer uses a blended learning model in writing skills and uses online instruction as a media telegram application, while this research is about using a blended learning method in reading comprehension and application. Third, The Effect of Blended Learning on EFL Learners' Reading Ability, by Tina Ghazizadeh and Hamidreza and Fatemipour. The results showed that blended learning has a statistically significant positive effect on Iranian EFL learners' reading ability.

Similar to this research uses the same research design and the differences of this research of the previous research is the writer using blended learning in Iranian EFL reading skills, while this research talks about using blended learning method in comprehension of students' reading. Does the blended learning method significantly affect the reading comprehension of students in the second grade of SMP N 1 Sipahutar?". The researcher was concerned about improving students' speaking ability in English subject through blended learning in the experimental group.

Based on the above five previous researches of the writer that the five have the same method with the writer's research entitled “The Effect of Blended Learning Method on the Reading Comprehension of Students in the Second Grade of SMP N 1 Sipahutar.

Conceptual Framework

Population

Arikunto based on the above determination that the population is the subject to be researched, it means that the subject is unlimited, so to make it easy for the researcher it should be limited first. In this class there were eight parallels, namely VIII-1, VIII-2, VIII-3, VIII-4, VIII-5, VIII-6, VIII-7, and VIII-8, of which the average number of students. there were 32 students in each class with a total of 250 students.

Treatment

The teacher greeted the students and asked them to lead the prayer in front of the class and then checked on them. The teacher was given a test and asked the students to demonstrate their skill by answering questions based on the text. Then the teacher asked the students to take the test and asked one of the students to lead a prayer in front of the class.

The teacher applied a blended learning method in teaching reading by giving additional online material that tells about narrative text, through document, voice message and PPT using WhatsApp groups. The teacher gave a topic to the students and asked them to do it themselves.
