Ros Evlyn1, Bagoes Widjanarko2 and M. Zen Rahfiludin3

1Mental Hospital of West Kalimantan Province

2,3Masters of Health Promotion at Diponegoro University Semarang

ABSTRACT

Background: Psychotic disorders are mental disorders that make patients become disoriented in the flow of thought that results in the inability to care for themselves, including in fulfilling food intake.

Moreover, the need for the family involvement in providing a balanced diet intake is very important.

However, the high number of nutritional status that is lacking in psychotic patients in the West Kalimantan Provincial Hospital is something that needs to be studied in the fulfillment of food during home treatment.

Research Objectives: To analyze the relationship among patient and family characteristics, knowledge, attitudes, experience of getting nutrition consultation and food security with family behavior in giving a balanced menu intake.

Research Methods: This study was an observational analytic study using quantitative methods with cross sectional design. Next, the subject of the research was 292 families, with a total sample of 58 people. Purposive sampling was used to take sample of the research. Thus, data analysis was performed with the chi-square test and logistic regression test.

Research Results: Statistically, the variables that were significantly related to the family behavior in giving a balanced diet towards Psychotic sufferers were nutritional status / BMI with p = 0.026, knowledge with p = 0.030 and attitude with p = 0.022. Attitude variable was the most dominant variable in family behavior in giving a balanced menu intake with a value of OR = 2.697.

Conclusion: Nutritional status, knowledge and attitude variables are significantly related to family behavior giving a balanced menu intake and the most dominant factor is attitude.

1. INTRODUCTION

Psychotic disorders are mental disorders that show psychotic behavior. This disorder is characterized by hallucinations and clear delusions. This is because there are disturbances both visual and visual perception caused by interference with the working system of the brain.1 Loss of conscious control impacts ignorance of oneself and experiences forgetfulness in everything including daily eating and drinking. This uncaring attitude results in psychotic patients tending to experience self-care deficits.2

ABSTRACT

The primary objective of this study was to determine the influence of family size on students’

academic achievement in business studies in upper basic education in Adamawa State, Nigeria. The study had two specific objectives from where two research questions were raised and two null hypotheses were formulated and tested. The design of the study was a mixed of descriptive survey and ex-post facto design. The population of the study was 69,487 students which were drawn from upper basic education schools across the five educational zones in Adamawa State, Nigeria. A simple random sampling technique was used to determine the sample of 382 students for the study. A structured questionnaire of 15 items was used to collect data and the data collected were analyzed using means and standard deviation, while the hypotheses were tested using simple linear regression analysis and Z-test at 0.05 level of significance. The major findings of the study include the following: family size has a positive significance influence on students’ academic achievement in business studies and there is no difference between males and females students’ academic achievement in business studies in upper basic education in Adamawa State, Nigeria. It was concluded that family size positively influenced their learning. It was indicated in the findings that the there is significant positive influence of family size on students’ academic achievement in business studies and there is no difference between males and females students’ academic achievement in business studies in upper basic education in Adamawa State, Nigeria. The researchers recommended that most of the parents are not fully aware that the larger their family size, the larger the academic challenges their children may encounter in their academic pursue, it is therefore recommended that parents should always plan the number of their children for proper monitoring of all the activities of their ward for effective learning and better academic achievement.

INTRODUCTION

Business Studies is an aspect of vocational education, which equips individuals with the necessary skills, and theoretical knowledge. This knowledge is needed for performance in the business world either for job occupations or for self employment (Oluwade, 2015). Therefore, Business Studies refers to educational programme offered at the secondary schools (formal education) and higher institutions aimed at providing vocational skills for children and youths. On the other hand, non- formal vocational education refers to educational programmes offered outside the formal school

MODELING THE IMPACT OF MAJOR ECONOMIC INDICATORS ON STUDENTS’

PERFORMANCE IN MATHEMATICS

Adamoah Yara Kingsley and Xiaoping A. Shen Department of Mathematics

Ohio University, Athens, OH

ABSTRACT

In this paper, a linear model that relate students’ performance in mathematics at West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and major economic indicators was designed as by way of continuation of an earlier study of the students’ performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in Ghana [Adamoah and Acquah].Quantitative analysis subject to the hypothesis testing is carried out. The results indicate that students’ performance and major economic indicators are positively correlated at significance level α = 0.01. Educational spending and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita are leading factors among others. Statistically, higher GDP contributes to the educational sector, more especially at the senior high school level, and this leads to higher educational spending which, in turn, better students’ performance in mathematics.

This positive outcome will translate to reinforce economic strength.

1.1 INTRODUCTION

Mathematics education is key to national development. This is true because Science, Technology, and Engineering are rotated on Mathematics and the success in each field is based on how the principles and methods of Mathematics are properly applied to solve real-life problems. In other related articles, it turns out that mathematics is a unique distinguishing factor between developed and developing countries in the economic performance (Mehmet and Sevgi, 2014).This is therefore, a major indication that the scientific and technology strength in developed countries (like USA, Singapore, UK, Japan, etc) is as a result of the priority given to the use of mathematics by those nations (Zachariah et al., 2012).The educational level is one of the main reasons for economic performance (economic strength) between developed and developing countries. Many developed countries have more priority to the study of mathematics and so their Science, Technology and Engineering are strong and have advanced in many other fields as well. In addressing the main issue of poor performance of students, many others have identified first the causes, and these include the misconception of both learners and some teachers about the subject (mathematics) as difficult one and so end up bringing in fear and anxiety in students which at end affect their general performance (Tata et al., 2014). “Students’ beliefs and attitudes towards mathematics teaching and learning play an important role in mathematics education” (Peter and Araña, 2010). There are other several factors that contribute to students’ poor performance and so any factor identified should be given the
