This research aims to find out the students' difficulties in elliptical construction and the factors that influenced the difficulties in the third semester of Unismuh Makassar.

We hope that the thesis titled "Analysis of Students' Difficulties in Elliptical Construction in the Third Semester of Muhammdiyah University of Makassar" provides more than information about the students' difficulties or difficulties themselves.

What are the students' difficulties in using elliptical construction in sentence writing at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. What are the factors affecting students' difficulty in using elliptical construction in sentence writing at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. To identify and analyze students' problems in using elliptical construction in sentence writing at Muhammadiyah University.

To find out the factors that make students' difficulties in using elliptical construction in sentence writing at Muhammadiyah University.

In addition, Thornburry (2001:1) states a system of rules (or pattern) which describes the formation of a sentence. According to many English dictionaries: 1) Grammar is the study of the classes of words, their inflections and their functions and relationships in the sentence 2) Grammar is the study and practice of the rules by which words change their form and combine into sentences. Because the grammar of a language is a description of the ways in which words can change their form and can be combined into sentences in that language. When they learn English, they should know the structure or pattern of the sentence because it is different with their own language.

Elliptical construction is a form of conjunction that deprives equal parts of the same predicate of a sentence. Elliptical construction is a part of English grammar that helps us to construct two sentences with the same predicate and the object so that there is no repetition for each sentence. Ariani et al (2017) said that it is moreover a shortening form of two or more sentences by removing parts of the sentence that have the same meaning.

So that ellipsis is used to avoid repetition of the same words in one sentence. According to these sources, the researcher assumes that the main purpose of elliptical construction is to make a short and simple sentence that fits the meaning. I don't mind either. The other side of either and or is talking about choosing between two possibilities and sometimes more than.

But in elliptical neither means "also/also" in negative form between two sentences and same meaning, so it produces in shorter sentence. On the other hands, Bakti (2017) in his research titled "The Analysis Elliptical Construction in Transporter Refueled Movie" found that 1) there are three types of ellipsis in the movie, they are nominal ellipsis, verbal ellipsis and clausal ellipsis, 2) there are three types of context which are situational context, background knowledge and co-textual context. Verbal ellipsis is that which operates in verbal group and the clausal ellipsis the omission of the non-finite part of the verbal group, all complements and adjuncts are also omitted.

It is clearly stated that there are several reasons of student error that indicate students' difficulties.

If the result of the test was then almost student with less correct, the researcher believes that the students' problems could be found using elliptical construction which was followed by an interview to strengthen the result of this research. The researcher interviewed both the students to find out the students' difficulties in using elliptical construction by considering that Dekeyser (1996) considers grammatical difficulty in relation to comprehension and production. The researcher conducted analysis after the result of the test and interview to find out the reason why the students have difficulty in learning grammar especially on elliptical construction.

And the students also had difficulties in using the elliptical construction to apply in sentences. Based on the interview, some of the students answering about their “understanding in using elliptical construction included their weakness in learning elliptical construction. It was about the students' difficulties in elliptical construction and what are the factors that affect the students.

In this case, students need more examples and more exercises to be able to use the elliptical construction, especially the positive and negative elliptical construction. Therefore, students' difficulties in using the positive and negative elliptical construction could be seen from figure 4 that the positive elliptical frequency about 75% of the incorrect answer. This meant that the students were at a difficult level in using the elliptical construction specifically to be applied in sentences.

So that the researcher comes to the conclusion that almost of the students difficult of meaning mapping where they often ignored the rules of elliptical construction. In this case it was about the formula of elliptical construction that was the reason for the problems.

FINDING AND DISCUSSION

Discussions

There were still difficulties of the third semester of the English Department of Muhammadiyah University in the academic year 2020/2021 in the use of the elliptical construction should be increased. On the other hand, the second part namely the negative elliptical construction can be seen that the students are at a moderate level because there is 63% frequency of students in the answer of the negative elliptical construction. The structure of the elliptical construction "Nadia" as subject so that "none" cannot be placed after it.

In other researches such as Astuti et al (2019) found in their research that the problems faced by students in elliptical construction such as difficulty in using elliptical connector, difficulty in using auxiliary in elliptical sentence and difficulty when releasing the auxiliary . Ariani et al (2017) also conducted the same research and found that students cannot use elliptical construction because most students are not interested in how the lecturer implements elliptical construction. Meaning problems: the students answered the question about the elliptical construction, where they should understand the meaning of the sentence.

Problem with form meaning mapping: students ignored the rules of elliptical construction that in positive sentence the conjunction must be used "so or also" and it is not "either". Based on three factors above, the researcher found that among the students found it difficult in several parts of elliptical construction, such as using auxiliaries do, does, did and in using elliptical connector also, so either, and neither where they still confused to use these sticks especially too and saw how nearly of them made mistakes in the sentence. Combine these sentences into affirmatives or negatives using So, Too, Either and None roughly elliptical construction grammar. The following table a and b show the result of the analysis test in terms of elliptical construction. because it can help us to fix sentence 3 properly.

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

This test will find out the difficulties and factors that influence you to learn English elliptical construction (such also, either and neither) as part of the grammar subject. Banyak yang berbentuk elips positif, negatif adalah atau dan tidak keduanya, dan yang terakhir adalah elips terbalik.
