Based on preliminary observation, the researcher found problems in the process of learning of natural science. References available in the library did not fully meet the needs of the students to learn natural science. The students only referred to teacher explanation as the source and center of learning information.
The students never use module as learning material. The students have difficulties in constructing their own concepts. Students ability is still low in constructing basic knowledge. This conditions put the students into the difficulties in understanding learning material so that the communication run into one direction or teacher center learning. To solve this problem, the researcher develop the module of learning of natural science oriented to constructivism and contained character education. The purpose of this research is to construct valid, practical and effective module for natural science learning oriented to constructivism and character education for students of class VIII SMP Negeri 11 Sungai Penuh.
This development research uses the Plomp model consisting of three stages, namely 1) preliminary research phase, 2) development or prototyping phase, and 3) assessment phase. The results of research showed that learning module of natural sciences oriented to constructivism with character education obtained very valid category with a value of 90,90%. The teacher's response is that the module is very practical with a value of 91,29%. The students' response is that the module is very practical with a value of 94,79%. This module also is effective in term of students' competence. In this case, students' competences more increased than the minimum achievement which is determined. Based on these results, we can conclude that larning module for Natural Sciences Oriented to Constructivism with Character Education for Students at class VIII Junior Hight School 11 Sungai Penuh can be declared valid, practical, and effective.

Berdasarkan hasil observasi awal yang dilakukan, peneliti menemukan hal-hal yang menjadi permasalahan di dalam pembelajaran IPA. Buku sumber yang ada di perpustakaan masih kurang memenuhi kebutuhan peserta didik untuk proses pembelajaran khususnya mata pelajaran IPA. Peserta didik hanya mengandalkan penjelasan guru sebagai sumber dan pusat pemberi informasi belajar. Peserta didik belum pernah menggunakan bahan ajar seperti modul.
Peserta didik mengalami kesulitan membangun konsep sendiri. Kemampuan peserta didik masih rendah dalam mengkonstruksi pengetahuan awalnya. Kondisi tersebut membuat peserta didik kesulitan dalam memahami materi pelajaran sehingga komunikasi berlangsung satu arah dan pembelajaran berpusat pada guru.
Menyikapi masalah ini, peneliti mengembangkan modul pembelajaran IPA berorientasi konstruktivisme bermuatan pendidikan karakter. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah membuat modul pembelajaran IPA yang valid, praktis, dan efektif berorientasi konstruktivisme bermuatan pendidikan karakter untuk peserta didik kelas VIII SMP Negeri 11 Sungai Penuh.
Penelitian pengembangan ini menggunakan model Plomp yang terdiri dari 3 tahap, yaitu 1) tahap investigasi awal, 2) tahap pengembangan atau pembuatan prototipe, dan 3) tahap penilaian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa modul pembelajaran IPA berorientasi konstruktivisme bermuatan pendidikan karakter memperoleh kategori sangat valid dengan nilai 90,90%. Kategori praktikalitas respon guru adalah sangat praktis dengan nilai 91,29%, dan kategori praktikalitas respon peserta didik sangat praktis dengan nilai 94,79% Modul ini juga telah efektif dari segi kompetensi peserta didik. Dalam hal ini kompetensi peserta didik lebih meningkat dari pencapaian minimum yang ditentukan. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa Modul Pembelajaran IPA Berorientasi Konstruktivisme Bermuatan Pendidikan Karakter untuk Peserta Didik Kelas VIII SMP dapat dinyatakan valid, praktis dan efektif.
