Teks penuh

In the practice of English language especially in the Junior High School, the purpose of reading is to understand the content of the written text. This means that reading is one of the ways to get information using written text. This means that reading is a thinking process to understand the content of the text by reading.

Because the purpose of reading is to understand the content of the written text we read.

Teaching Reading a.Teaching Reading

There are some methods for teaching reading, such as the fan-n-pick method and the direct teaching method. Before explaining the fan-n-pick method, the researcher wants to explain cooperative learning, because fan-n-pick is a method involved in cooperative learning.

Theoretical Framework

These are the advantages of Fan-N- Pick, the team building results when students work together in a team with their friends. Then, thinking means that students are able to share their idea in their group and communication is available when they talk to each other to discuss. 40.

Hypothesis

Research Design

In this research used experiment to know the effectiveness of fan-n-pick method for teaching reading. Here there were two variables, fan-n-pick method as dependent variable and teaching in reading as independent variable. A : experimental class (the students who are taught using the Fan-N-Pick method) B : control class (the students who are taught using the direct method).

O2 : post-test for the experimental class after using small group techniqueO4 : post-test for the control class after using conventional method. Here, a pre-test before treatment was done to make students in the same condition and to know the student's reading and post-test after treatment to measure the effectiveness of that treatment. The purpose of the research design used in reading instruction is to know that this method is effective or should not be applied in reading instruction.

For this step, the researcher applied the fan-n-pick method in the experimental class and the conventional method in the control class. Before performing the t-test, the researcher would have to find the other result; mean, standard deviation and standard error of each variable.

Population and Sample 1. Population

A population might consist of all children in a particular interest group, perhaps all children in one school, or all children in a particular age range in a particular district or city, or in Britain in general.50 It meant that the population consists of a group of students at a school. Population consists of all items in any field of study.51 So if there were people in the place, this could be called population. In this study, the population consisted of eighth grade students of MTs Miftahul Ulum Balong in the academic year 2015/2016.

For these classes, the researcher chose two eighth grade classes as the experimental class and the controlled class. To select a sample, the researcher took a reading performance data that had been conducted by the teacher. Then the value of the results, the researcher measured the average and standard deviation of the classes (had capacity-like or not).

The result of homogeneity found that some of the two classes are considered homogeneity or have similar ability. Then among the two classes belonging to experiment class and control taken as a sample in a lottery way. A sample is a set of elements selected from a population in some way.52 So, sample was a part of the population.

Instrument of Data Collection 1. Validity

It was very important to test the validity of our instrument before conducting the research. To test the validity and reliability of the instrument, the researcher took a sample of 23 respondents who used 30 items of reading test.56 The validity of the calculated item instrument for 30 items on reading material. So when the coefficient correlation was below 0.413, it could be concluded that the item was not a valid instrument.

Thus, the items were said to be valid instruments if the coefficient correlation of magnitude is more than 0.413. Here product moment formula was used to know the elements of the instrument valid or invalid with the criteria. A reliable test is consistent and reliable.57 Reliable was used to know the relationship between the questions.

S2: variance of total test scores (weighted standard deviation) P: percentage of correct responses to a single item. The feasibility calculation above can know the value of the instrument variable reability of the reading achievement of students of grade VIII.59 Values 0.5660 then consulted with the table ―r‖ at the 5% significance level is 0.413.

Technique of Data Collection

So documentation was a kind of important technique for getting information about anything in the form of notes, transcripts, books, newspapers, etc.

Technique of Data Analysis

Calculated the value of Z by the formula X was the original data value and μ was the population mean could be estimated using the sample mean or median while was the standard deviation of the sample values. The test of homogeneity was the test of the ratio of variance between two or more groups.66 This could be tested with the Harley test. Ha: there is a significant difference in mean between variable X and Y Ho: there is no significant difference in mean between variable X and Y.

If the score was higher than tt , then Ho was rejected and Ha was taken and the meaning was that there is significant difference in mean between variable X and Y. If the score was less than tt , then Ho was taken and Ha was rejected and the meaning is that there is no significant difference in the mean between variable X and Y.

Data Description

The learning process was done in a set of the learning process involved in this study such as pre-test, first treatment, second treatment, third treatment with fan-n-pick method and post-test. After carrying out treatments in the teaching of reading, the researcher conducted post-test to know the effect of the treatment by using a fan-n-pick method. The learning process was done in a set of the learning process involved in this study such as pre-test, first treatment, second treatment, third treatment with direct teaching method and post-test.

After giving treatment using direct instruction, the researcher conducted post-test to know the student's performance. The item test was the same as the item test in the post-test in the experimental class. The researcher gave post-test after giving treatment to experimental class (using fan-n-pick method).

And the table below was the result of the post-test in the experimental group and the control group. So, it could be concluded that the post-test of the students taught using the fan-n-pick method was good. While in the control class, the pre-test and post-test achievement difference of the two tests is not far.

Data Analysis

  • Normality
  • Homogeneity
  • T- Test 75

In the experimental class, the performance before the treatment shows that the students' performance is lower, but after the treatment with the fan-pick method, the students' performance has increased. A normality test was performed to determine whether or not the data distribution was normally distributed.73. Create the table below to find the mean and standard deviation of variable x (the student's posttest in the experimental class).

The researcher entered the data into the Kolmogorof-Smirnof formula after finding the mean and standard deviation. The researcher entered the data in the table below to find the mean and standard deviation of the students' posttest in the control class. To collect data, the researcher uses reading test for 23 students for experimental group and 23 students for control group, to know the difference of students reading performance of eighth grade students at MTs Miftahul Ulum Balong in the academic year, the researcher used ―t‖ test formula as given below.

Post-test analysis of the student in the Control Group that is not taught by the fan-n-pick method (variable Y).

Discussion and Interpretation

Based on this statement, the researcher explains that there was a significant difference between the students who were taught using the fan-n-pick method and the students who were not taught using the fan-n-pick method, which means that the students who were taught using the small group technique, achieve better results. result in reading achievement. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis () was accepted, which states that students who are taught using the fan-n-pick method will achieve a better result in reading achievement. From the above data, the researcher could conclude that students who were taught using the fan-n-pick method achieved a better result than those who were not taught using it.

There was a significant difference in reading performance between the students who were taught using the fan-n-pick method and the students who were not taught using the fan-n-pick method. In other words, the fan-n-pick method was effective in improving the students' reading performance of the eighth grade students of MTs Miftahul Ulum Balong in the academic year 2015/2016.

CLOSING

Conclusion

Suggestion

The school is suggested to improve the system and environments for a better teaching and learning situation especially for the students. Teachers must be creative to choose the best technique to apply in the learning process, in order to make students interested in following the lesson; teachers should present the language in a pleasant, relaxed and comprehensible manner; the teacher is not only an informant, but also a facilitator. They should give students instructions and directions on how to compose a text; teachers must teach using the appropriate technique to teach the students and make variations of the technique in each session.

Students are expected to be active in the learning process, and they are expected not to be shy in unfolding their role; It is better for students to keep sharing so that when students learn together, they will take and give understanding for broad overview.
