This chapter presents background of the research, limitation of the study, question of the research, objective of the research, benefits of the research and organization of thesis. Writing is one of the English skills that must be learned in an integrated way, but it is considered the most difficult language skill for learners to learn. Another factor that affects the students' poor writing is that they find it difficult to get the ideas.

By applying one of the techniques, the teacher can encourage students to participate in classroom activities. Based on the explanation above, the writer is interested in finding out the effectiveness of outdoor learning to improve students' writing skills. Therefore, the author conducts a study on, "The effectiveness of outdoor learning towards students' writing skill of eleventh grade in SMAN 1 Jetis Ponorogo in the academic year 2015/2016".

The result of the research will answer these questions, which form the basis of the research. The purpose of writing is more than just teaching someone to convey ideas to readers. Once students have generated a concept, they can consider revising the content and organization of their ideas.

Rather, it develops an awareness of the complexities of the real world and can help develop critical thinking skills.

That research is classroom action research and the result is that the outdoor activities are effective in learning vocabulary rather than teaching inside the classroom. An outdoor activity is similar to outdoor learning, but this research is different with my research. This is caused in this research focus on vocabulary but in my research focus on writing skill.

Theoretical Framework

Hypothesis

Ho : There is no difference between students' writing skills before and after being taught using outdoor learning in the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Jetis Ponorogo in the academic year 2015/2016.

RESEARCH METHOD

Research Design

Then they were given treatment (which was taught outside of the classroom) and they were given the post-test.

Research Variable

Population and Sampling

Based on the above design, the topic of the research was first tested beforehand to get the students' performance. The population of the research was the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Jetis Ponorogo in the academic year 2015/2016, which consists of 3 classes. The sample was a subset of the target population that the researcher plans to study in order to generalize about the target population.

Sampling was the process of properly selecting and taking a sample from the population so that it could be used as a valid representative of the population.39 This meant that a good sample should be as representative as possible of the whole, so that the generalization of the sample as true as the population. According to the above explanation, the sample used by the writer in this research was simple random sampling. The writer selected 1 class out of 3 classes as a sample, which was the IPA 2 class consisting of 20 students.

Instrument of Data Collection

Arikunto stated that the test was a series of question exercises or other means used to measure the skills, knowledge, intelligence, abilities or talents of an individual or a group. So a test was a method of obtaining the data by asking the respondent a question. This test was used to measure students' performance in writing skills before and after they were taught using outdoor education in SMAN 1 Jetis.

Heaton defined the validity of a test as the extent to which it measures what it purports to measure and nothing else. If each item (Rxy) had a positive correlation greater than 0.468, the item was valid and if each item had a correlation less than 0.468, the item was invalid.41.

Technique of Data Collection

Technique of Data Analysis

Standard deviation of variable X and variable Y D = Sum of the differences of variable X and variable Y b.

Research Location

  • Place of the Research

  • The Result of Assumption Test for Parametric Statistic a. Normality Test

The student pre-test result of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Jetis can be determined from the data collected above. From the above calculation, it can be concluded that the mean of the pre-test before using outdoor learning is 70.7, the range is 13 and the standard deviation is the pre-test score of SMAN 1 Jetis students is sufficient. The student pre-test result of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Jetis can be determined from the data collected above.

Analysis data for the students' post-test scores for the students in the eleventh grade at SMAN 1 Jetis. Normality of data and calculation of students' posttests after using outdoor learning with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov formula.

Since the maximum value of ɑ1 was 0.2347, where the figure was smaller than the D table, it was decided to accept Ha, which means that the students' posttest data after using outdoor education was normally distributed. Based on data analysis, the purpose of this study was to know whether there was an effect of using outdoor education in teaching writing skills in the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Jetis.
