Some Partient Ideas

  • Concept of Pronunciation
  • Concept of Dialect

According to the above statement, pronunciation is the study of how words in a specific language are clearly formed when individuals speak. Pronunciation is the term used to refer to the conventional or habitual utterance of words, and it is the process by which learners clearly generate the utterance words while speaking. Segmental, according to Verhaar (2010), refers to the meaning of sounds that can be segmented/separated.

Roach (1983) specifies four characteristics of a stressed syllable. 4) has a vowel that is not identical in quality to the adjacent vowels. In English, there are two basic patterns of intonation: in other words, your pitch rises to the highest level on the most important word of the sentence, then falls towards the end. The term "falling intonation" refers to the way the voice of a sentence or group of words falls on the last stressed syllable.

Rising intonation refers to the process by which the pitch of a voice increases over time. The term "rising intonation" refers to how the voice rises toward the end of a statement. Definition of dialect According to the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, a dialect is a variety of a language that is spoken in a particular country and may differ in grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation from other varieties of the same language.

Linguistic diversity is a term that refers to the many language dialects that are influenced by social influences. The Selayar language is known to be related to the Coastal Konjo language spoken in the Bulukumba regency of South Sulawesi.

Instrument of Data Collection

  • Semi-structured Interview
  • Document Analysis
  • Procedure of Data Collection
  • Technique of Data Analysis

The interview was to establish to what extent their Selayarese dialect affects their pronunciation, focusing on word stress and intonation. Thus, the purpose of this study is to determine the effect of Selayaresian dialect on students' speaking skills. As described in the previous chapter, the researcher used a number of instruments to collect data, including interviews and document analysis, to determine the effect of Selayaresian dialect on students' pronunciation.

The interview consists of five questions to measure the student's speech, focusing on word stress, and eight questions to find out how the student's intonation follows the Selayarese dialect. The interview was conducted, the question of the interview was to obtain data on the influence of the Selayare dialect on the student's word accent. Based on the above data, it showed that the student misspells more words such as writing (/ˈraɪtɪŋ/), meaning (/ˈmiːnɪŋ/), reading (/ˈriːdɪŋ/), Selayarese dialect was shown to affect word stress when the student speaks.

Based on the answer of the student from Selayar, it can be seen that their Selayarese dialect affects their intonation. The results of the pronunciation test and documentation analysis showed that the Selayarese dialect affected their stress and intonation when they spoke English. On the contrary, if the students accent incorrectly, this does not mean that the Selayare dialect has given a negative transfer to the pronunciation of the students. a factor that affects the student's pronunciation.

This is influence because it is already carried and influenced by the learner's environment, which is already influenced by the Selayarese dialect. It is proposed for the next researcher, the researcher hopes that this research can inspire other researchers to further investigate the influence of Selayarese dialect or other local dialect.

Findings and Discussion

Research Findings

The data was taken in the classroom by collecting an interview with the student one by one. To get the data the researcher used pronunciation analyzer and oxford dictionary to get the result of the application therefore the result was by analyzing and filtering the data. The researcher discovered that the students created some misplaced tension as a result of the test.

The two-syllable words, three-syllable words and four-syllable words all had the wrong stress. It showed that Selayerese dialect impact on English word stress of Selayarese Student on the two-syllable words, three-syllable words and four-syllable words all had the wrong stress. Based on the answer above, it showed that student mostly misplaces the word that has more than one syllable like our course (/kɔːs/).

It showed that Selayerese dialect effect on English word stress by Selayarese Student on two-syllable words, three-syllable words and four-syllable words all had the wrong stress. In my opinion English is really important to learn so that we can interact with many people. The difference is in the tone or rhythm when I want to pronounce words both English dialect and local dialect.

Based on the answer above, it turned out that students mostly mispronounce words with more than one syllable, such as English (/ˈɪŋɡlɪʃ/), reall'y (/ˈriːəli/), import'ant (/ɪmˈpɔːtnt/), lea 'rn (/ lɜːn/), intera'ct (ˌɪntərˈækt/), man'y (ˈmeni/), peop'le (/ˈpiːpl/), difference (/ˈdɪfrəns/), ton'e /təʊn/, rhyt'hm (/ˈrɪðəm/ ), pronunciation (/prəˈnaʊns/), diale'ct (/ˈdaɪəlekt/). Based on the above data, the researcher found that during the falling intonation test, the student still raises his intonation if the word has one syllable that usually falls into intonation, and with two or three syllables, the student usually raises his intonation.

Discussion

Based on the findings, the researcher concluded that all students correctly stressed monosyllabic words in final position, for example in the words yes (/jes/) and yes (/ðæt/). Sometimes the student also correctly pronounces words that have two syllables, for example (/laɪk/) and find (/faɪnd/). This is because the stress, especially a single syllable word in the Selayare dialect, is usually produced on the last syllable. Of course, they communicate using Selayarese, even though the students have the correct accent, it does not mean that the Selayarese dialect has transferred positively to the students.

If this phenomenon is identified due to the non-existence of a specific stress placement rule in multisyllabic words. It is influence because it is already carried and influenced by the environment of the students who act since they were children. This is due to the pupils' habits in their community when they speak the mother tongue.

It is proven when the students were interviewed by the researcher to find out the influence of Selayaarese dialect on their accent and intonation in terms of pronunciation. The students showed that their way of making a phrase was not natural and that their pronunciation of a word in English was always influenced by the local dialect. Teachers should take full advantage of the similarities between the two languages to help students master correct pronunciation.

Conclusion and Suggestion

Conclusions

The researcher comes to the conclusion from the data and discussion that students of Selayar still exert influence on how the word is pronounced in English. Selayarese students still have an impact on the tone and emphasis used when speaking English. The majority of students generate the words by adding some stress and characteristic intonation, just like when they speak in their own language.

Suggestions

And also the researcher suggests that they should maximize their practice in English to get natural English word stress and better intonation when producing words in English.
