The objective of the research was to know the intrinsic motivation of students in learning English at SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar. The research population were students included in three sample classes which are X, XI, XIclass in SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar. This meant that the student at SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar have intermediate intrinsic motivation in learning English.

The research realizes that many hands had given their help and helpful suggestions for the completion of this thesis. From the importance of motivation in learning, some problems of motivation can be established in the teaching of English. In Ryan's journal, he argues that intrinsic motivation is doing an activity for its intrinsic pleasures rather than for any separable consequences. Motivation is considered an essential element along with language capacity in shaping success in learning a new language in the classroom environment.

By knowing about students' motivation, teachers can know their students' interest in learning English. Based on the above research, this research provides information on students' motivation to learn English in SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar. This result of this research can provide information about intrinsic motivation in their learning English.

When they know the importance of intrinsic motivation in learning, students will build their motivation by themselves. The result can be used to improve their teaching to improve students' motivation to learn English.

The population of this research was 42 students of SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar which consisted of three classes. It aimed to find out the students' intrinsic motivation, especially instrumental motivation to learn English. The students' participation in research on the material and activities in the teaching and learning process analyzed by observation sheet.

The findings of the study relate to the score ranking of the student questionnaires for each item and the average score of the student questionnaires. The data analysis of the average score shows that the intrinsic motivation of the students in learning English at SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar was at an average level. FINDING AND DISCUSSION

Discussion

The discussion on how to know students' instrumental motivation in learning English was obtained from the questionnaires. According to the presentation of the above data, the majority of students answer the questions from the survey questionnaires strongly agree and agree. The information was that most of the students were motivated to learn English because of their internal motivation.

There are some reasons why students have intrinsic motivation to learn English, for example, students want to learn English because they want to improve their English language skills, they want to be more relaxed with English speakers, they will participate more freely in the activities of another cultural group, they are learning English , because it's something they've always wanted to do, and they learn English because they enjoy learning. For these reasons, students will strive to achieve their reasons and goals in learning English. From the explanation of intrinsic motivation, it is clear that students in SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar have medium intrinsic motivation in learning English.

The researcher hopes that the institution will value the students with good performance. For teachers in SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar This finding showed that students in SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar have good motivation to learn English. This will give the teacher an advantage to involve the students in the process of teaching and learning English.

Since the students have good motivation to learn, they can easily complete their studies well. For the teachers in general, the teacher should promote motivation in learning and ensure that students enjoy learning and are satisfied with academic activities so that they can be more active and make better progress in learning English. Learning English allows me to participate more freely in the activities of other cultural groups.
