Keith Karnock, a member of the Elfrida, Arizona FFA Chapter, is shown on our cover sharpening a disc in the shop. SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION— The Scholarship Committee of the American Angus Auxiliary has announced that high school graduates may now apply for its scholarships for 1970. MERCURY SEED TREATMENT— The USDA has notified pesticide manufacturers that federal registration of seed treatments containing products with mercury, temporarily cancelled.

RESISTANT APPLE – Agricultural Experiment Stations at Illinois, Purdue and Rutgers Universities announced the introduction of the nation's first scab-resistant apple at the Illinois State Horticultural Society. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT—The students with a degree in agriculture will be "educated"' in the 70s to help improve our environment and prevent pollution, in addition to producing food, says Director of Resident Instruction B. R. Bertramson of Washington State University. Agricultural graduates will be involved more than ever in land zoning, land planning, erosion control, water supply protection, forage runoff and beneficial recreation.

I was wondering when you would write an article in one of the magazines about the problem of pollution in the United States and how it affects farmers across the country. Although my term as Indiana State President ended in June, I am still a member of FFA through the Purdue Collegiate FFA Chapter. I am especially grateful for the excellent treatment of opportunities for youth trained in agriculture in.

And that's what Firestone's exclusive Triple Strength construction gives them—the special way we bond the tread to the body, reinforce the sidewalls, and insulate every cable.

CROPS

The young farmer started farming by renting 35 acres from his uncle for one-third of the profits. In exchange for his work, he gets the use of his father's machinery on 126 hectares of land. Spores of plant diseases land almost anywhere on the plant and can cause damage to the crop.

On the other hand, insect pests move around the plant and probably do. Therefore, at low application rates where the spray is quite concentrated (5-15 gallons per acre), application efficiency is highly dependent on the redistribution of chemical deposits on plant foliage. In addition, light rains or showers after spraying with small amounts do not reduce the protective effect of the fungicide - they slightly enhance it.

When evaporation or drift is too high, a significant amount of the chemicals can be dispersed into the atmosphere rather than landing on the plants. Furthermore, when droplets are extremely small, the water in the spray can evaporate before it actually settles on the plants. Avoid spraying during the heat of the day when rising thermal air currents are likely to occur.

Regardless of the type of equipment you use, thorough mixing is very important with concentrated sprays. He was a Sunday school teacher, a volunteer firefighter and worked in his community on cerebral palsy. Arthur can operate all equipment on site and when hardwood is cut from an area, Arthur takes care of minor repairs and regular maintenance with 2, 4, 5-T.

He has most of the equipment on rent and has already completed work on five greens, giving him another outlet for plants. He helped install 10 acres of overhead irrigation equipment, maintain farm machinery, drill wells and install pumps. He later became forest foreman, overseeing a four-man pruning crew. Many of the most important adjustments have been made to the handling of bulk cargo and the handling of containers of agricultural products.

Along several routes, trains stop at transport stations for only one product, for example livestock, on their way to market. Trucks, on the other hand, transport many agricultural products within 500 kilometers of lifts and ports, in addition to long distances.

Furthermore, of the total water used for irrigation, about 60 percent evaporates or is used by crops. Taking these facts a step further, only about 25 percent of the water drawn to the crop actually stays in the root zone. Chapter Impact Conferences To see Washington is just one part of the FFA SUMMER'70 conference program.

Yes, during the SUMMER of '70, FFA officers from all parts of the country will stand up for their chapters and improve themselves. Chapter heart of Lake Wales, Florida, FFA, was named one of three outstanding students at Lake Wales High School. Nick Nichols believes in getting it right, whether it's riding waves, just before a turn or planning your career.

Feeder cattle prices are expected to remain high relative to feeder cattle prices, but later in the year it will depend. With a smaller fall crop of pigs, pork production in the first half of 1970 will continue well below the previous year. Prices are expected to rise as spring lambs arrive at market, then follow the usual pattern of falling to low levels in late summer or early fall.

Poultry and eggs. Production of eggs, broilers and turkeys is expected to increase in 1970. Thus, the prices of all poultry products should be much higher on average. But an increase in the national allotment by 1 million hectares and liberal skip-row planting rules to measure cotton against the allotment. The goal of the 1970 feed grain program is to divert about 38 million acres from feed grain production, slightly less than the total area diverted in 1969.

Prices are expected to remain somewhere near 1969 levels, with corn and sorghum prices averaging moderately higher than in the past and oats and barley falling slightly. Overall, the increasing consumption of fodder grains by livestock is expected to approximate increases in production. With the 1970 bean crop expected to be about the same size as the 1969s, and export and feed needs expected to increase by 15 percent, soybean supplies could tighten.

The New Holland Model 1880 Crop-Cruiser forage harvester can now be purchased with a V-8 diesel engine generating 165 horsepower. The two pieces of equipment are "capacity-matched" to deliver an even flow of feed at low power. The new Model 250 requires only five to ten electrical horsepower and has the ability to dry 1,000 to 1,500 bushels of corn or grain per day.
