Past Progressive
Menyatakan aktifitas yang sedang berlangsung pada waktu tertentu di masa lampau.
Jika digunakan bersamaan dengan simple past menyatakan sesuatu terjadi saat suatu aktifitas sedang berlangsung.
Menyatakan dua aktifitas yang sedang berlangsung pada waktu yang sama di masa lampau.
o While I was watching TV, my brother was talking on the phone.
o I was exercising whenhe called me.
o We were eating at 6 am yesterday.
PAST SIMPLE & PAST CONTINUOUS
Pattern 1: Subject + was / were + Verb-1 + ing + When + Subject + Verb-2
Pattern 2: Subject + was / were + Verb-1 + ing + While + Subject + was / were + Verb-1 + ing PAST SIMPLE & PAST CONTINUOUS
I was studying while they were watching a movie.
I (have) my dinner when some of my friends (come) to my house and (ask) me to go out with them.
Complete the sentence by using “Past Simple” or “Past Continuous”

Past Progressive
Saat kalimat yang kedua klausanya menggunakan simple past, maka arti berbeda dengan kalimat yang salah satu klausanya dalam progressive.
PAST PERFECT
Past Simple
• Kejadian di masa lampau dengan waktu yang spesifik.
I ate a bowl of mie ayam last night.
• Kejadian di masa lampau yang berakhir.
I lived in Bandung from 2006 – 2008
• Urutan kejadian di masa lampau.
First, I watched a movie. After that, I went to Gramedia.

• Kejadian yang “sudah” dilakukan tanpa keterangan waktu.

• Kejadian di masa lampau yang efeknya masih ada/berlangsung hingga saat ini.

She has lived in Depok for 10 years.
• Kejadian berulang di masa lampau hingga saat ini.
I have read that novel 7 times.

• Suatu aksi telah selesai pada suatu titik di masa lalu sebelum aksi lainnya terjadi..
I had had that car for five years before it broke down.
She had studied English before she moved to Jakarta.
