This edition of the Alumni Bulletin focuses on recent developments in digital dentistry that are transforming oral care. Maxwell Lyon reflects the collective joy of the D1s as they begin their dental school journey. On the IU-Fort Wayne campus, all health sciences will transfer from Purdue to IU.

Michele Kirkup, Paul Reifeis, Lisa Willis, and the late William Browning published an article in the 2014 issue of the Journal of Dental Education on the introduction of CAD/CAM into dental education. Waldemar Polido, clinical professor, director of the oral and maxillofacial surgery predoctoral program and co-director of the Center for Implantology, Aesthetic and Innovative Dentistry.

The amount of digital information you can capture with CBCT images is nothing short of phenomenal.”—Dean John Williams. A core team of faculty members, who had their first exposure to digital dental restoration in private practice, led the research and development effort to purchase the school's first CAD/CAM system, then the E4D system, and began to include early digital learning and second-year preclinical courses. Faculty felt it was important not only to provide digital dentistry for clinical activities, but also to provide multiple opportunities for students to become familiar with the technology during preclinical courses.

With multiple scanning and milling units available in preclinical and clinical settings, IUSD is a leader among dental schools nationally in requiring students to use CAD/CAM to scan, design and fabricate crowns during the preclinical years, said Dr. . Digitally designed implants will be a major part of digital advancement in the school in the future, said Dr. With high-speed clinic networks in place, plans call for more digital opportunities and increased use of digital radiology and computed cone beam. technology (CBCT).

The amount of digital information you can capture with CBCT images is nothing short of phenomenal," said Dean Williams. May, who published an article on the use of CAD/CAM for anterior esthetics in the March/April 2017 issue of Operative Dentistry.

Faber received his prosthetic nose in less than 24 hours after his first visit to Dr. The digital team that worked on the production of the prosthetic nose included Cade Jacobs, a design specialist/.

Yet the digital manufacturing process makes it possible to do in hours what used to take weeks or even months to do using the traditional time-consuming process of making a facial impression using a papier-mâché type material and a plaster cast, which sculpts the artificial part from clay or wax, and then creates another plaster mold to manufacture the prosthesis. With a digital workflow, we get closer to a more precise first prosthesis, because I can rely on digital design and rapid prototyping,” Dr. Even if this is the first prosthesis we do for a patient, it usually fits better and has more aesthetic appeal than I could achieve by sculpting with clay or wax and relying on plaster molds to produce a silicone prosthesis.”.

Much of the island has had power lines, phone lines, internet and water supplies cut since the night before the hurricane. Private and military planes and ships are bringing supplies from the US and other countries, and we are distributing them as quickly as they arrive. Our local dental society is publishing a weekly updated list of dental offices working across the island to help people find out and get treatment for their dental needs.

The ADA Board of Trustees has approved a $250,000 donation from the ADA in support of the Foundation's Emergency Disaster Grant Program. The University of Puerto Rico School of Dental Medicine suffered minor damage and reopened on October 9, but many students and staff have lost their homes and belongings and are in need of support, the ADA reported (“ADA, ADA Foundation mobilize to help Puerto Rico's dentists,” ADA News, October 11, 2017). David Diaz Rubayo has been gathering essential supplies to send to Puerto Rico, his home country.

Top on the list, Diaz Rubayo said, are propane fuel, D batteries, bug repellants, battery-powered fans and personal hygiene products. David Diaz Rubayo collected and shipped donated goods to Puerto Rico, his home country.

Garetto served as director of the Bone Research Laboratory, served as associate dean for dental education, taught orthodontics and facial genetics, and was instrumental in developing the dental school's ethics curriculum. With that dedication, he was responsible for developing the ethics curriculum at IUSD into one of the more robust dental school programs in the country,” said colleague Dr. Peter Schwartz, associate professor of medicine and philosophy and interim director of the IU Center for Bioethics.

But in reality, you are the best teachers of the desire and passion to give back. I'm a big believer in the saying, "Actions speak louder than words." I talk to students about philanthropy, but I also realize that during the rigors of dental studies, future philanthropy may be one of the last things on our students' minds. The latest example: All 125 offices and 27 other designated spaces in the new clinical addition, scheduled to open in spring 2018, are sponsored by alumni and friends of the dental school.

I can think of no better way to educate our current students about the impact of private support than to have them learn the tools of their trade in a new state-of-the-art facility that is literally a token of (name recognition) your loyalty and generosity. By becoming a member of the IU Arbutus Society with a gift of real estate, you can define your legacy and invest in the future of IUSD. Every day as I walk past the new Fritts Clinical Center and watch construction progress, I am reminded of the people who pledged their support and believe in the vision.

I also think of the thousands of alumni who give gifts to support capital improvements, scholarship opportunities to alleviate student debt, and the establishment of faculty chairs. If you would like more information about how you can make a difference in the future of dental education at Indiana University, please contact me at acvanzee@iupui.edu or.

As momentum for the Indiana University for All campaign continues to build, it's even more important to think about how you might want to leave a legacy at IUSD. You can ensure that the dental school understands your wishes so that your gift is used exactly as you intend. I hope that those of you who have already assigned the IU School of Dentistry to your property will please let us know of your plans so we can express our appreciation.
